About This Audiobook

He's b-a-a-ack! Despite their best efforts, Carter and Sadie Kane can't seem to keep Apophis, the chaos snake, down. Now Apophis is threatening to plunge the world into eternal darkness, and the Kanes are faced with the impossible task of having to destroy him once and for all. Unfortunately, the magicians of the House of Life are on the brink of civil war, the gods are divided, and the young initiates of Brooklyn House stand almost alone against the forces of chaos. The Kanes' only hope is an ancient spell that might turn the serpent's own shadow into a weapon, but the magic has been lost for a millennia. To find the answer they need, the Kanes must rely on the murderous ghost of a powerful magician who might be able to lead them to the serpent's shadow . . . or might lead them to their deaths in the depths of the underworld. Nothing less than the mortal world is at stake when the Kane family fulfills its destiny in this thrilling conclusion to the Kane Chronicles.

  • Narration: Grace Capeless is credited on a 2025 edition of a story whose longest reviews date from 2012.
  • Themes: Egyptian mythology, sibling magicians, civil war in the House of Life, an apocalypse played for laughs.
  • Mood: Fast, funny, and end-of-the-world loud.
  • Verdict: A satisfying close to the trilogy, on a listing where most reviewers are grading the parcel.

In July 2012, a reviewer called this the perfect conclusion to a brilliant series. The audiobook edition on this page is dated October 30, 2025. That distance explains most of what is odd about the column underneath it: the two substantial responses were written more than a decade before this release, when the novel was new and the trilogy had only just closed, and they were answering a book, since the recording did not yet exist.

A Reissue That Looks Identical to a Fresh Session

Carl E. Ahlm's review does the summarizing work, and does it in the register of a school librarian. Young magicians Carter and Sadie Kane, whose parents were killed in battle with the gods, have learned to follow the path of the Ancient Egyptian gods and become respectable magicians. The magicians of the House of Life are being killed and are on the brink of civil war, the gods are divided, and the young initiates of Brooklyn House stand almost alone against chaos.

Three of the five posted responses are not about the story at all. One from Japan reads, in its entirety, that the item arrived in good condition and the buyer likes it. One from Turkey reports that the parcel was delivered securely and nothing else. A third, filed from France in February 2026, describes buying the book for a brother who loved it, calls it great value for money, and recommends it to fans of the author. Those are transaction notes wearing five stars.

Grace Capeless is credited on an edition published in late 2025, which is the one genuinely current fact anywhere on the record. The Kane Chronicles ran as a trilogy and this is the third entry, so an audio edition surfacing now is a reissue of a finished story, not a new arrival. Whether the recording itself is new or an older one relisted under a fresh date is not stated, and the answer would change what a buyer is actually getting. A reissue and a fresh studio session look identical in a metadata field, and this record gives you no way to tell them apart.

Eleven Hours on a Hilarious Mythological Platter

Apophis, the chaos snake, is threatening to plunge the world into eternal darkness, and the Kanes are stuck with the impossible task of destroying him once and for all. He's b-a-a-ack, the description announces, which sets the register precisely: apocalypse delivered with a joke sitting on top of it. The way out requires an ancient spell that might turn the serpent's own shadow into a weapon, except that the magic has been lost for a millennia and nobody left alive remembers it.

Eleven hours and twenty minutes gives the finale room to breathe, and the structure rests on a specific gamble: to find what they need, the Kanes must rely on the murderous ghost of a powerful magician who might lead them to the shadow or might lead them to their deaths in the depths of the underworld. OpheliasOwn frames the appeal neatly, calling Riordan the master of repurposed mythological tales and describing a heavy dose of mythology served on a hilarious platter.

Riordan's Egyptian material is the draw for a very particular listener, and both long reviews say so outright. OpheliasOwn opens by confessing a lifelong interest in things Egypt paired with almost no knowledge of Egyptian mythology, and treats the series as the remedy. Carl E. Ahlm takes a more instructional line, pitching it as a high interest mythological book for young and old alike. Between them they describe the same transaction: myth absorbed while you think you are just following a plot. That is a durable pitch, and it goes some way toward explaining why the book keeps resurfacing in new editions.

Separate These Reviews by What They Can Tell You

Separate these reviews by what each one is capable of telling you. Two are detailed reactions to the novel from the summer of 2012, written when the book was new. Three are logistics: condition on arrival, delivery, and a gift that landed well. Not one of the five engages with an audio edition, and the two that engage with anything substantial were posted years before this listing came into existence at all.

Recency and Usefulness Have Come Apart Here

Disney Hyperion is the publisher on the record and the release date reads October 30, 2025, which places a novel from the early 2010s onto a new-release shelf. Anybody browsing by date will encounter it as though it were current. Anybody browsing by score will encounter a 4.8 assembled from reactions to several different editions bought in several different countries, some of them grading the shipping. The number is real and it is measuring more than one thing.

Alicia's entry is the useful one for a gift buyer and nearly worthless to anybody else. It records a purchase, a delighted recipient, and good value for money, without a word about the story, the length, or the way it reads. Posted in February 2026, it is simultaneously the most recent thing on the page and the least informative. That imbalance fairly summarizes how the whole column is weighted. Recency and usefulness have come apart completely here, and the page sorts on the wrong one of the two.

Comedy and Adventure Instead of a Lesson

Egyptian mythology is the entry point, and the two detailed reviews agree about who benefits: somebody who wants the myth arriving as comedy and adventure, not as instruction. Carl E. Ahlm's phrase, young and old alike, is the accurate one. The book is written for children and declines to condescend to them, and the joke rate stays high enough that an adult listening in the same car will not spend eleven hours resenting it.

First-time listeners should not begin here under any circumstances. This is the third book of three, the description opens by referring back to previous failed attempts on Apophis, and both long reviews treat it explicitly as a conclusion. The stakes only register if you have already watched Carter and Sadie build Brooklyn House and lose people doing it, and none of that history is recapped in the publisher copy.

The wrong buyer here is anybody needing a story that stands on its own, or anybody who cannot work with a review column built mostly from delivery notes. Completists finishing the Kane Chronicles have every reason to buy it, and need only be aware that the page is selling a 2025 edition on the strength of enthusiasm collected in 2012.

Why is this audiobook dated 2025 when the reviews come from 2012?

Because the edition is recent and the reactions are not. Disney Hyperion carries an October 2025 release date, while the two substantial responses were posted in July and August of 2012, shortly after the novel appeared. The page pools them together with no indication of which edition anybody was holding.

Is this audiobook suitable for a younger listener?

One reviewer recommends it right across the age range, and the writing aims squarely at children without ever talking down to them. The plot involves murdered parents, a murderous ghost, and an apocalypse, so it is adventure, well clear of gentle bedtime material, and eleven hours is a real commitment for a young listener.

What are the shortest entries in this column actually saying?

Almost nothing about the book. One from Japan says the item arrived in good condition, one from Turkey says the parcel was delivered securely, and one from France records a gift that pleased its recipient. All three carry five stars, so they raise the score without describing the content at all.
