About This Audiobook

Before You Press Play

  • Read by: Raphael Corkhill is the credited reader, and with several dozen investors named across the book, the reading has more people to keep distinct than most nonfiction.
  • At its heart: investor psychology, rational thinking under uncertainty, recovering from adversity, wealth as a means rather than an end
  • Vibe: Curious and unhurried, closer to long-form profile than to market instruction
  • Short version: Strong material about how careful people think, sold on a listing that badly needs untangling before you buy.

William Green spent years being welcomed into the homes and offices of investors who are not, as a rule, welcoming, traveled alongside them, and in one unforgettable episode sat still while one of them attempted hypnosis as a way of reprogramming a subconscious. That is the reporting method behind this audiobook, and it explains why the finished thing sounds so unlike the rest of the investing shelf. Access of that depth is rare, and it was not bought with a press request.

The Review

Green's premise is that great investors are worth studying for reasons that outlast their returns. Four questions organize everything and the book keeps circling back to them: how to invest intelligently, how to think rationally, how to recover from adversity, and how to raise the odds of a joyful and satisfying life. Three of those four have nothing to do with markets, which tells you what kind of book this is. The money is the entry point rather than the destination.

Some of these subjects gave Green days at a stretch. Others kept the conversation going across years, in exchanges the book describes as countless. That distinction matters more than it looks, because the second kind of access is what produces material nobody offers in a first interview: the disasters, the drawdowns, the decisions that looked idiotic for a long time before they looked wise. Green reports that these investors spoke frankly about their own calamities, and that frankness is what carries the book.

Ordering is the sharpest thing about that title. Richer comes first because that is what sells, but the argument moves steadily rightward across those three words, and by the end the wealth is doing very little of the work. A reader who wants a system will find the sequence frustrating. A reader who wants to understand how careful people think under uncertainty will find it the entire point.

Names alone justify eleven and a half hours. Green thanks Charlie Munger, Ed Thorp, Howard Marks, Joel Greenblatt, Bill Miller, Mohnish Pabrai, Guy Spier, Peter Lynch, Nick Sleep, Bill Ackman, and Li Lu among many others, and the list keeps going long past the point where most investing books would have run out of names. It is also not purely American. At least one Indian investor sits in that acknowledgment alongside the American value-investing names, which makes the existence of a Hindi edition feel less like an afterthought and more like an audience the material was always going to find.

Profile writing suits the ear better than instruction does. A chapter built around a person has a shape you can follow while doing something else, and Green's material is anecdotal by construction: rooms entered, trips taken, questions answered badly and then answered again. Eleven hours and thirty-three minutes is a comfortable length for that kind of book, roughly a chapter per errand, with no diagrams to squint at and no spreadsheets to reconstruct in your head. The one thing a listener loses is the ability to flip back to a name mentioned four hours earlier, and with a cast this large that loss is real. Keep a note open if you intend to follow up on anyone.

Worth saying as well: the questions Green organizes around are more portable than the subject matter suggests. Thinking clearly, absorbing a reversal without panicking, and deciding what money is actually for are problems that arrive whether or not you hold a single share. Investing books that admit as much are rare, and the ones that manage it without sliding into self-help are rarer still.

Weak Spots in Richer, Wiser, Happier

Buyers should slow down at the listing itself. Nearly every field on this record describes a printed Hindi translation rather than an English recording: a Hindi-language publisher, an ISBN rather than an audio identifier, the language field reading Hindi, and a description that appears in Devanagari script. The narrator credit, Raphael Corkhill, belongs to an English performer, and the running time is the only field pointing at an audio product at all. Before you buy, confirm which language and which format you are actually being sold, because the record supports two different answers.

Compounding that, the description field is not doing its job either. What sits in that field is not a description of the book but its acknowledgments, the author's thank-you list to the investors who gave up their time, and it cuts off mid-name partway through the roll call. Useful as that page is for identifying who appears in the book, it tells a browsing buyer nothing about structure, chapter count, or whether the edition is complete. Nobody scanning the page would learn what the book argues.

Both written responses attached to the record are equally thin, and both were filed from India. One consists of the single word Best. The other, headed as a recommendation for investing-minded people, praises the paper quality, which is a genuine compliment to a physical object and no information at all about a recording. A five-star average resting on four ratings total is not a signal you can act on, and this pair is exactly why.

Who It's For

Underneath all of that, the book suits investors who have already read the mechanical texts and want the psychology underneath, and it suits people with no market exposure whatsoever who like watching thoughtful individuals explain how they handle being wrong. If you enjoyed long-form profiles of decision-makers in any field, the format will feel familiar. Anyone hunting a repeatable method will be disappointed, since the closest thing on offer is a temperament.

Hold off if you need certainty about what you are purchasing here. Buyers who want the English recording should verify the edition first, and buyers who want the Hindi translation should note that the running time on this record implies an audio product rather than the paperback the rest of the fields describe. Skip it entirely if you want tactics, screens, or a portfolio you can copy, because Green is interested in how these people think and almost never in what they currently own.
