About This Audiobook

In Brief

  • Voice: The recording is in French throughout, with Olivier Chauvel credited, so the language line matters more here than any performance question.
  • Big ideas: A farm boy turned dragon rider, inherited destiny, mentorship, an empire under a malevolent king
  • Atmosphere: Classic quest fantasy, earnest and expansive, pitched squarely at younger readers
  • Worth it?: A solid French edition of a much-loved fantasy novel, filed under an English title that will mislead half the people who find it.

The language field is the single most important line on this page, and almost nobody reads it. Eragon here is a French recording: a French publisher in Audiolib, a French reader in Olivier Chauvel, a description written entirely in French, and nineteen hours and thirty-three minutes of Christopher Paolini's first novel delivered in translation. The English title sitting at the top of the listing is what turns this audiobook into a trap for anyone browsing at speed.

Star Counts Hide a Real English Mixup

Nothing about the rating line can be true as displayed. One rating is recorded, a single vote can only be a whole number of stars, and 4.6 is therefore a figure no lone rater could ever have produced. Set that aside and a second problem surfaces at once: five people have written responses here, and five written grades cannot sit underneath a counter reading one. Whatever those five are attached to, the arithmetic on this page is broken in two independent places at the same time.

Writing from the United States in December 2025, the pool's only complaint states the consequence in three plain sentences: this was not in English, more attention should have been paid, and a credit went to waste. Hard on themselves and entirely fair on the listing, because the title, the author name and the shelf category all read as English to a browsing eye. One field says otherwise, and it is not a field anybody checks first.

None of which makes this a bad recording. Audiolib publishes it, Olivier Chauvel reads it, and the description sells that reading as the reason to buy, presenting this as the moment the saga finally reached audio. For a French-speaking listener the proposition is straightforward and rather appealing. For everybody else it is close to twenty hours in a language they may not have, which no amount of production quality can fix.

Brom and Saphira Guide a Farmer's Quest

Filed from France in January 2016 at five stars, one account describes precisely the appetite this edition was built for. That reader had loved the novel for years, watched it gather dust on a shelf, and never found the time to reread the first volume of the saga. The same account puts the hero at sixteen while the description says fifteen, and its date sits more than three years before this recording was released, so what it describes is the novel rather than the reading.

Story is the reason any of this exists, and it survives every layer of confusion stacked above it. A young farmer finds a smooth blue stone in the forest, carries it back to his village of Carvahall, and the stone turns out to be an egg. What hatches carries an inheritance as old as the Empire itself, and the boy is pushed out of his own life into a quest across the whole territory, guided by the counsel of an old storyteller named Brom and accompanied by a blue dragon called Saphira. The description leaves him fifteen years old with an empire's fate in his hands.

Dates across the whole pool are worth laying out. Two of the five responses date from 2016, one from 2022, one from 2023, one from 2025, while this edition was released in June 2019. At least two of the grades attached to this page were therefore written years before the recording existed. The five arrive from five different countries, which is the clearest sign that editions have been stacked under a single average, a common practice and one nobody discloses.

Chauvel Reads a Translation Nobody Credits

A July 2023 response from Canada is the shortest useful item on the page: a very good book, and if you are a fantasy reader, this one is for you. It was written in French, which tells you more than its content does, because it confirms that the audience actually finding this edition is a French-speaking one. The satisfied buyers are working in the language of the recording. The dissatisfied buyer was not, and that is the entire pattern.

Nobody is credited with the translation. An English novel read aloud in French requires a translator, that translator's sentences are what a listener hears from the first line to the last, and this page names the author, the reader and the publisher while leaving the translator off completely. The practice is standard across the industry and remains indefensible, particularly on a listing where the language of the recording is the single most consequential fact about the product.

Smaller details are worth catching before you buy, and two of them matter. The description promises a companion PDF delivered with the purchase confirmation and available from your library, mentioned exactly once and in French, right at the foot of the copy. And the page itself is bilingual by accident: title and byline display in English, everything explaining what the product actually is appears in French. A buyer who does not read French cannot read the warning.

French Speakers Get the Strongest Case Here

French speakers are the entire audience for this edition, and for them the case is strong: a long, much-loved fantasy novel, one reader throughout, and a publisher with a serious catalog behind it. Anyone learning the language who wants a familiar story to work through has an even better case, because knowing the plot in advance is what makes long-form listening in a second language survivable rather than exhausting.

Collectors of the saga across formats make up the other group. The first volume alone is a substantial sit, and readers who know the book in English may find the translated text genuinely interesting on its own terms, particularly in how the invented names and places have been handled. Anybody in that position should still play the sample first, since that handling is what either works or grates for the whole duration.

Non-French speakers should not buy this edition, and the listing does remarkably little to prevent them. Skip it too if you specifically want to hear this novel in English, because that is not the product on sale here whatever the title suggests. Francophone fantasy readers, and learners who know the story well enough to follow it in a second language, are the two groups this recording genuinely serves, and it serves them properly.

Is this Eragon audiobook in English or in French?

French. The language field says so, the publisher is French, the reader is French and the entire description is written in French. Nothing in the title or the byline signals it, so the language line is the one thing to check before spending a credit on this listing. Play the sample and you will know within ten seconds.

How long is the Eragon audiobook and how is it paced?

Nineteen hours and thirty-three minutes, which is a serious commitment for a first volume. The story runs chronologically from a discovery in the forest to a long journey across the empire, so it rewards steady listening rather than short scattered sessions, and no interlocking timelines complicate the sequence along the way.

Why do the written reviews come from five different countries?

The five responses arrive from the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada and France, spanning 2016 to 2025. A globally popular novel accumulates comment from wherever the storefront operates, and several of those entries predate this recording, which suggests more than one edition has been pooled under a single average.

Is this the first book in the series?

Yes. The series fields on this page carry Eragon as book one, and the story is self-contained enough to work as an entry point: a discovery, a hatching, a mentor, a journey. What the page does not tell you is whether the later volumes exist in the same edition with the same reader.
