About This Audiobook

Every family has its own little secrets, but none are as big as mine.

Ever since my mother was murdered by vampires, my life has been turned upside down. After spending the better part of the school year in an asylum, I finally get to go back home. But with my mother now gone, and only a step father who would rather climb into a bottle than pretend that he cares for me, who could ever call this place home?

And to top it all off, now I’m being shipped off to go live with an aunt who I never met, on some strange island no one ever heard of. What a weird place. I hate it here.

That is, until I got an eyeful of the insanely gorgeous Isaac Rune. Not only does he make my heart race, but there something different about him too. Something mysterious and unworldly.

From the moment I got here, I knew that Red Rock was an unusual place. The mysteries surrounding this island are almost as bewildering as my dark family secret. Well, almost...

Nothing on this page was written by anybody who has heard it. The narrator field reads Virtual Voice, which means the eight hours on offer were generated rather than performed, and the entire response column predates the audio release by somewhere between nine months and nearly four years. White Shadows is J. G. Massie's first House of Rune book, an independently published paranormal about a girl whose mother was murdered by vampires and who gets shipped off to an island nobody has heard of. The audiobook runs seven hours and fifty-eight minutes and was released on April 29, 2025.

Dates first, because they decide everything else. Three of the four written responses went up within six weeks of each other in the middle of 2021, which puts them nearly four years ahead of an audio edition released April 29, 2025. The fourth arrived in July 2024, nine months ahead of it. Fifty-seven ratings sit above them, and not one of the responses a shopper can open bears any relationship to the thing being sold. They grade an earlier edition of the same text, which is genuinely useful information about the writing and no information whatsoever about the eight hours on sale here.

Machine narration is the other decisive fact, and the record states it in the plainest terms available: the narrator field says Virtual Voice. That is not a person, a studio or a pseudonym. It is a synthetic reading, and it changes what this purchase actually is. Synthesis handles plain declarative prose better than it handles anything else, and this book is written in a chatty teenage first person that runs on sarcasm, exasperation and swoon, three registers that live entirely in timing. Whether the generated voice manages them is the single most consequential question on the page, and nobody who has written here was in a position to answer it.

Why It Works in Audio

Voice is the book's real asset, and the description demonstrates it inside two hundred words. The copy is written entirely in the protagonist's first person and it moves fast: a mother murdered by vampires, most of a school year spent in an asylum, a stepfather who would rather climb into a bottle than pretend to care, an aunt she has never met, an island nobody has heard of, and a blunt declaration that she hates it there. Then the pivot, delivered as a shrug, into an eyeful of the insanely gorgeous Isaac Rune. That is a well-judged blurb, funny where it needs to be and bleak where it counts, and it tells you more about whether eight hours here will suit you than any badge could.

Momentum is what the enthusiastic filings describe. The July 19, 2021 filing calls the book action-packed with a strong story line and says you will want to go straight on to the next one. The July 20, 2021 filing credits a daring twist on humans, vampires and werewolves, praises the character work, and reckons the whole thing would make a good film. Note the werewolves. The publisher's description mentions vampires and nothing else, so an entire second species arrives from the response column rather than from the copy, which is either a spoiler or a selling point depending on your temperament.

Weak Spots in White Shadows

Substance, oddly, lives in the three-star filing of June 13, 2021, which repays a second read. It likes the heroine and almost nobody else, arguing that the character development around her needs a lot of work and that the islanders' behavior does not follow from anything established about her. It names the only three characters it liked, one of them a maid who brought her apple pie, and it points at a specific incoherence: an aunt who threatens to kill her and then immediately declares her the chosen one. That is a structural objection, not an impression, and it arrives from a reader who got far enough in to catalogue the problem.

Metadata around the book is thin in every direction. No tags are attached at all, and the single category reads Teen and Young Adult, so a paranormal romance running on vampires, werewolves and a chosen-one plot carries no genre label whatsoever. The publisher field reads Independently Published, with no imprint, no studio and no supplemental material named anywhere on the page. The description itself contains an uncorrected sentence, missing a verb at the exact moment it introduces Isaac Rune, which indicates how much editing passed over this listing before it went live. Seven hours and fifty-eight minutes of generated audio is being sold on the strength of all that.

Best Suited For

Paranormal YA readers who want the genre in its 2010s shape, an isolated island, a brooding love interest, a heroine who turns out to be central to everything, will find this delivers precisely that. The five-star filing of July 19, 2024, the only response posted from the United Kingdom while the rest come from the United States, closes by saying it cannot wait for the next one and describes a team of characters of many kinds fighting to save one another. Two marketplaces stacked under a single badge is worth noticing on its own. Listeners who need airtight motivation from their supporting cast should treat the sample as a test rather than a formality.

Price and format are where this lands. An independently published first novel with a machine reading is a cheap way into a series, and the enthusiasm in the response column is real even where none of it concerns the audio. Set against that: a genre novel with no genre label, an empty tag field, a description nobody proofread, a series with no named sequel, and a badge assembled from votes cast years before the recording existed. Nobody who has written here can tell you how the synthetic reading holds up across eight hours.

Is this audiobook narrated by a person?

No. The narrator field reads Virtual Voice, which identifies a synthetic reading rather than a human performer. No studio, director or co-reader appears in any field. Anyone sensitive to machine narration should audition the sample carefully, since eight hours of teenage first person is a demanding test for it.

Why are all the reviews older than the audiobook release date?

This recording carries an April 29, 2025 date, while three written responses were filed in mid-2021 and the fourth in July 2024. Every one of them grades an earlier edition of the same text, so the fifty-seven ratings above them measure the book rather than this recording.

Does the story finish here, or does it end on a hook?

The series is named The House of Rune and this is its first book, with the description closing on unresolved mysteries about the island and the narrator's family secret. The next volume is nowhere on this page: no name, no number, no date, so anyone who wants more has to go looking elsewhere.

Heroine is good, but character development needs work

I like the heroine, but the character development and why she even likes anyone else except Amber needs a lot of work. Her father and her aunt do not care about her at all and most of the people’s actions on the island do not make sense in reference to her...
