I listened to The Surrogate Mother on a Tuesday evening when I had about eight hours of work email to ignore. That is, I think, the ideal context for Freida McFadden: you need something that will genuinely hold your attention against distraction, something with a premise urgent enough to keep you in your seat. The setup here is pure McFadden - a sympathetic woman in a desperate situation, a helper with something to hide, and a mystery that the reader suspects they can see coming but cannot quite clock precisely enough to spoil.

Abby has spent years trying to have a child. Failed infertility treatments, adoptions that collapsed at the last moment - the accumulation of disappointment has worn her down to a specific kind of quiet desperation. When her personal assistant Monica offers to serve as a surrogate, the offer feels like the universe finally correcting a long injustice. It is not, of course. Monica is not who she says she is, and the woman now carrying Abby's child has an agenda that will not stay hidden. The thriller machinery engages early and runs cleanly to the end.

Where This One Lands

McFadden is a genuinely skilled practitioner of the domestic thriller form. Her particular talent is making the ordinary threatening - the assistant, the friend, the neighbor - by giving those figures a hidden interior life that the protagonist cannot access. In The Surrogate Mother, that formula is refined to its essentials: who can Abby trust, what does Monica actually want, and what will either woman sacrifice to get it? Reviewer TwistedPage noted that "about three-fourths of the book kept me in intense suspense" before the final section became slightly less thrilling, which tracks with the structural reality of thrillers that hold their reveals too tightly - the release can feel smaller than the build-up earned.

The infertility storyline is where McFadden does her best character work. Reviewer Sharae James singled out Abby's emotional experience specifically: "Her desperation and vulnerability felt realistic and added depth." That emotional grounding is what keeps the thriller from becoming a pure puzzle box. Abby is a character you understand, which means the threats to her feel real rather than mechanical.

Alyson Krawchuk's narration is a reliable fit for McFadden's pacing. The prose moves quickly, and Krawchuk does not over-dramatize the suspense beats - she lets the writing carry the tension rather than amplifying it artificially. Her voice for Abby carries the appropriate exhaustion without making the character passive, and the scenes involving Monica are handled with the right degree of surface-level normalcy over underlying unease.

At seven hours and forty-six minutes, the runtime is almost perfectly calibrated for this kind of thriller - long enough to establish real investment in the characters, short enough that the tension never needs to be artificially sustained. McFadden's books are widely noted for their readability, and the audio format makes that readability a genuine virtue: this is a book you can finish in a day of focused listening.

Before You Commit to The Surrogate Mother

Reviewer Robyn DeMars, comparing this to The Housemaid, found the ending "somewhat predictable." That is a consistent observation across multiple McFadden titles, and it reflects something real about her method: the premise is usually more surprising than the resolution. If you come to The Surrogate Mother having read McFadden's other work, you will likely sense the shape of the ending before it arrives. The book is not trying to trick sophisticated thriller readers so much as it is providing a reliably satisfying narrative experience for audiences who want emotional engagement alongside their plot mechanics. The Lifetime movie comparison in one review is not entirely unfair as a description of tonal register, though McFadden's prose is considerably tighter than that comparison implies.

Recommended For

Listeners who enjoy McFadden's catalog and want another entry with her characteristic combination of emotional grounding and thriller plotting will find this satisfying. First-time McFadden readers looking to start somewhere may prefer The Housemaid for the premise's freshness, but The Surrogate Mother stands on its own and does not require any prior McFadden reading. Those looking for the kind of psychological complexity found in Tana French or Kate Atkinson will find this lighter - McFadden's territory is efficient entertainment with genuine feeling, not literary ambiguity. For what it sets out to do, it does it cleanly.

The Short Version

  • Voice: Alyson Krawchuk handles the dual-register thriller pacing well, keeping emotional scenes grounded while sustaining narrative tension through the more suspenseful passages.
  • Big ideas: Desperation and deception in the pursuit of parenthood, hidden identity, the vulnerability of trust
  • Atmosphere: Tense and propulsive, with a domestic thriller undertow
  • Worth it?: An efficiently constructed psychological thriller that delivers on its central premise, though listeners familiar with McFadden's other work may find the beats recognizable.

The Surrogate Mother is a superb Freida McFadden thriller

The Surrogate Mother is a superb Freida McFadden thriller. I was introduced to Freida McFadden's books a year ago by my son’s wife, who loves McFadden’s books, and I've been hooked on them ever since. I did not read the books in the chronological publication order, and this did not...

Spoiler-Sensitive Review

The Surrogate Mother was an enjoyable and fast-paced read, though it didn’t feel particularly unique in terms of overall concept. The storyline had strong Lifetime movie vibes, making it fairly easy to predict the general direction early on. However, the execution kept the story entertaining and engaging throughout.I especially appreciated...

Decent read, but predictable

After reading The Housemaid, I was eager to read this book. It had an easy to read story and nice flow to the storyline. However, I felt like the ending was somewhat predictable, and no real likable characters

Edge-of-Your-Seat Thriller

The Surrogate Mother is one of my most recent reads by Freida McFadden, and I couldn’t put it down. About three-fourths of the book kept me in intense suspense, and while the last portion was slightly less thrilling, it still delivered a satisfying and twisty conclusion.
