About This Audiobook

He's a player in more ways than one....

College junior John Logan can get any girl he wants. For this hockey star, life is a parade of parties and hookups, but behind his killer grins and easygoing charm, he hides growing despair about the dead-end road he'll be forced to walk after graduation. A sexy encounter with freshman Grace Ivers is just the distraction he needs, but when a thoughtless mistake pushes her away, Logan plans to spend his final year proving to her that he's worth a second chance. Now he's going to need to up his game....

After a less than stellar freshman year, Grace is back at Briar University, older, wiser, and so over the arrogant hockey player she nearly handed her V-card to. She's not a charity case, and she's not the quiet butterfly she was when they first hooked up. If Logan expects her to roll over and beg like all his other puck bunnies, he can think again. He wants her back? He'll have to work for it. This time around, she'll be the one in the driver's seat, and she plans on driving him wild.

Hockey house, senior year, and a freshman who has stopped being impressed: the audiobook opens Elle Kennedy's second Off-Campus book on a premise the genre has been perfecting for decades. John Logan can get any girl he wants, according to the description's first line, and behind the grins he is dreading what happens after graduation. Grace Ivers has already been burned once by him and has come back to Briar University unwilling to be charmed twice. Lorelei Avalon is the single name attached to the recording, which runs ten hours and twelve minutes. What follows is a second-chance romance in which the man has to do the work, out loud, for most of the book.

Logan's Grovel Covers More Than Grace

The pleasure here is structural, and it has a name in romance circles. One response, posted in April 2015, puts it in the title of its own write-up, saying that Logan gives good grovel, and then lays out what he is groveling around: a final year he is dreading, a father with a drinking problem and a family business waiting to swallow him, an NHL dream quietly written off, and a crush on his best friend's girlfriend that he has not managed to bury. That is a heavier load than a college romance usually carries, and it is why the apology arc works. Logan is not merely sorry, he is stuck. The apology has to cover the mistake with Grace and the larger evasion underneath it, which gives the second half something to be about beyond forgiveness.

One name appears against the recording, which is worth knowing before you buy. Lorelei Avalon takes both leads, a house full of hockey players and a heroine whose entire arc depends on sounding unimpressed rather than wounded, and not one written response on the record says anything about how the reading turns out. Romance listeners who have grown used to duet productions, with one performer per point of view, should treat that as a reason to sample rather than as a verdict. Grace's dryness is the thing to listen for, since the book stops working the moment she sounds like she is waiting to be won.

Ten Hours in the Driver's Seat With Grace

Grace is why this one has lasted. The description makes her position explicit, that she is not a charity case and not the quiet girl she was, and that this time she will be the one in the driver's seat, which turns the usual dynamic around: the hockey star does the pursuing and the freshman sets the terms. The December 2015 entry, graded four stars, credits the series with well-developed characters and what it calls a mature approach to college relationships, and that is the right compliment. Consent, self-respect and the difference between wanting someone and deserving them are all live questions in the plot rather than decorations on it.

Kennedy's wider cast helps too. These books share a house, a team and a friendship group, so couples from other volumes drift through as background, and a January 2023 response from France describes exactly that reading pattern, arriving here after another book in the series and measuring the couples against each other. Ten hours is a comfortable size for that kind of listening, long enough to live in and quick enough to get through in a week, and the sports-romance frame gives the plot a calendar to move along: season, practices, graduation. The writing handles group scenes well, which matters in audio, because a house full of teammates is where the jokes live and where the plot keeps handing the leads reasons to be in the same room.

Three Spellings for the First Book's Lead

Series position is the first thing to sort out. This is the second Off-Campus book, and although the central couple is new, the emotional setup depends on knowing who Logan has been carrying a torch for and why that is a problem. The review column will not settle it for you either, since three entries reach back to the first book's lead and none of them give him the same name, offering Garrett, Garret and Graham across three separate write-ups. Start with the first book if you want the crush to land as betrayal rather than as background noise.

Expectations need managing in two other places. A May 2020 response from Canada, continuing through the series, enjoyed this one but not as much as the opener, which is a common verdict on second books built around the friend rather than the captain. Heat level is unambiguous in the description, which talks about a sexy encounter, puck bunnies and driving him wild, so expect an open-door romance rather than a closed one. Reader enthusiasm also predates the recording: the column stretches back to the spring of 2015, months before this November 2015 file, and forward to 2026, so the average pools print readers with listeners.

Best for Readers Who Enjoy a Long Apology

Anyone who reads romance for the apology rather than for the meeting will be well served: this is a book about repair, and the grovel is generous. It suits listeners who like campus settings, team dynamics and the specific comedy of a group of athletes sharing a house, and it suits people who want emotional weight without darkness, since Logan's family situation is treated seriously and never turns the book grim. A January 2026 response from Spain sums the whole experience up in six words, saying it is good and that the writer liked it, which is a fair description of the comfort on offer.

Skip this one if you want a standalone, if you dislike the best friend's girlfriend complication, or if a hero who spends the first act drunk and self-pitying is a dealbreaker rather than a starting point. Skip it too if closed-door romance is your preference. For everybody else this is one of the more durable second books in a series that made its name on exactly this move, and ten hours in the Briar house is a reliable way to spend a week of driving.

Quick Take

  • Voice: Lorelei Avalon carries the entire cast alone, both leads and a house full of hockey players, in a genre where duet productions are now common.
  • Big ideas: second-chance romance, grovel and repair, college hockey, family obligation
  • Atmosphere: Warm and banter-driven, with real weight under the flirting
  • Worth it?: A satisfying apology arc for series readers, though the first book gives it most of its meaning.

A Few Questions About The Mistake

Do you need to hear The Deal before this audiobook?

It helps considerably. Two separate responses in the column reach back to the opening book to explain who Logan is pining after and why that is a problem, which tells you how load-bearing the history is. The romance resolves on its own, so a newcomer can follow the plot at roughly half strength.

How explicit does this one get?

Open door, judging by the description alone, which mentions a sexy encounter, the heroine's virginity, puck bunnies and her plan to drive the hero wild. Expect the physical relationship to be shown rather than implied. Listeners who prefer closed-door romance should choose something else in the genre.

Is this audiobook a duet recording with two narrators?

No second performer is credited anywhere on the record, so expect a single reader covering both leads and the surrounding cast. Romance listeners who specifically enjoy dual-voiced productions should play the sample first, since the alternating viewpoints in this story are carried by one voice throughout.
