About This Audiobook

Seventeen years of buried secrets and a divorce stood between them.

It started with her estranged father's murder. The last thing LA detective Gabby Woodward needed was the custody of her entitled half-brother. She was jaded and overworked. A nurturing soul she was not. And he was a reminder of him. Her ex-husband. The man who crushed her heart and trampled on her love.

Ex-mercenary Declan Roarke had hit rock bottom. His new assignment mentoring teen actors was the gateway to hell. And the last thing he needed was to be near his ex-wife. The woman who trampled on their vows and ruined his ability to trust.

Working together exposes feelings for each other that never died. It also uncovers the conspiracy that tore them apart. Lies. Murder. Plot twist. Welcome to Hollywood.

The Ex Assignment is book one of the Rogue Protectors series, but it can be heard as a stand-alone.

Which spelling do you trust when a listing disagrees with its own reviewers? The credit line on this audiobook reads Victoria Paige. The entry signed diana jaycox, sitting at the top of the review column, calls the author Victoria Page and then recommends the book without reservation. A second contributor gets the name right and refers to Ms Paige throughout. It is a small discrepancy, and a useful warning: on this listing, most of what you can check sits slightly out of alignment with the rest. Underneath the noise sits a ten and a half hour romance from Podium Audio, narrated by Emma Wilder, filed as the first Rogue Protectors book and sold as a standalone in the same paragraph.

Is The Ex Assignment Worth Your Time?

Seventeen years of buried secrets and a divorce set the terms. Gabby Woodward is an LA detective who did not ask for custody of an entitled half-brother and receives it anyway, after her estranged father is murdered. The description is blunt about her: jaded, overworked, not a nurturing soul. Declan Roarke, an ex-mercenary at the bottom of a long fall, draws an assignment mentoring teen actors and calls it the gateway to hell. They were married once. Now they work the same job, and the conspiracy that ended the marriage turns out to be the ground they are both standing on. The description signs off in fragments, lies and murder and a plot twist, before landing on the line Welcome to Hollywood.

What the review column describes is not quite the same book. Stacey follows a tangent about peanut butter toast with sliced apple before arriving at the actual point, which is that the story moves past domestic detail into bombs, cartels and biochemical warfare, and that this happens often enough to prompt a joke about the author moonlighting at the CIA. TeamCieluch tags the book with a four-item list: second chance, crazy family drama, cartel storyline, standalone in a series. Hollywood barely comes up. Neither account contradicts the description, but a listener expecting industry satire on top of a murdered father should know that the people who got there first talk mostly about the cartel.

The Best Parts of The Ex Assignment

Second chance is the load-bearing trope, and it lands. Natalie K writes that the story took hold from the first chapter and never let go, singles out Gabby and Declan as a pair, and calls the addition of Theo a stroke of genius. The entry then closes on a wish: that Hope Kelso gets a chance at love too. That last sentence is worth more than the star rating attached to it. Readers who start naming secondary characters they want books about are readers a series has already caught, which means the machinery worked on at least one person exactly as designed.

Emma Wilder is credited alone for the full ten and a half hours. That is one reading covering a hard LA detective, a former mercenary, a teenage half-brother, and whatever the cartel material demands in the way of menace. Dual-lead romance is among the harder single-narrator assignments in the genre, since the two registers must stay distinct across a full-length book without curdling into caricature. The listing offers nothing beyond the credit itself, so what you can take from it is the shape of the job: one voice, two leads, ten and a half hours, no co-narrator anywhere on the page.

The description also makes a claim worth holding onto, that this is book one of the series but can be heard as a stand-alone. E.M, writing from the United Kingdom, treats it exactly that way, calls it a fantastic read with plenty of twists and turns, and recommends it for romance and drama without mentioning a series at all. Podium Audio put it out in June 2021, at the start of the run, so anyone who wants to try this author before committing to a series can begin here without homework.

Before You Commit to The Ex Assignment

Almost everything in the review column was written by someone holding a book, not headphones. The top entry describes loading up a Kindle with recommendations gathered from Facebook, Bookbub and Amazon, all free under a Kindle Unlimited subscription, and being pulled in by the cover art. TeamCieluch calls it a quick and easy read. E.M calls it a fantastic read. None of that is worthless, since plot, pacing and character travel intact between formats, but treat the column as a verdict on the story and not on the edition you are actually buying.

Three of the five entries break off in mid-sentence, which is a scraping artifact, and one of those breaks costs you real information. TeamCieluch gives the book three stars and then starts laying out a personal rating scale, five stars meaning loved it and could not put it down, and the text stops partway through the next line. The scale that would have explained what three stars means to that reader is gone. What survives is the criticism: a little bit expected, some weird twists and turns, and not dark enough for the mood that reader was in.

One more mismatch is worth knowing about. Stacey's entry announces four and a half stars in its opening line, while the star recorded against it on the page reads four. The written verdict and the counted verdict disagree by half a star, which is worth remembering before you lean on any single number here. The page also says nothing about heat level, and the column is not specific either, so anyone who picks romance by spice rating is going in without that particular data point.

Should You Listen to The Ex Assignment?

This one is for second-chance romance readers who want a suspense spine under the reunion, and specifically for people who like their military and cartel material braided into the love story instead of parked in a separate subplot. If you enjoy watching two competent adults get forced to share a workplace they both resent, the setup delivers exactly that: a detective who does not want the custody she has been handed, a former mercenary babysitting teen actors, and seventeen years of unfinished business. Ten and a half hours is a comfortable length for that kind of slow unpicking.

Skip it if you need a dark register, since the reader who gave it three stars wanted it darker, or if predictability bothers you more than it entertains you. Skip it too if the Hollywood line at the end of the description is what sold you, because the people who have finished it talk about cartels and family drama far more than about the industry. Treat the column here as a plot review and buy the recording on the strength of the credit and the runtime, since that is all this listing gives you about the audio.

The Short Version

  • Narrator: Emma Wilder is credited alone across ten and a half hours that have to hold a jaded LA detective, an ex-mercenary, a teenage half-brother and a cartel plot, so the entire cast rests on one reading.
  • Subjects: Second-chance romance, forced proximity at work, family secrets, conspiracy and cartel suspense.
  • Tone: Warm at the center, loud at the edges.
  • Bottom line: Worth ten hours if you want your second-chance romance carrying bombs and cartels, though the review column will tell you far more about the ebook than about the recording.

Before You Listen

Does the review column here describe the audiobook or the ebook?

The entries point at print and ebook. One describes loading a Kindle with recommendations under a Kindle Unlimited subscription, another mentions being drawn in by the cover art, and two call it a read. That makes the column useful on plot and pacing and much less useful on the ten and a half hour recording.

Is this the first Rogue Protectors book, and can it be heard on its own?

It is book one of Rogue Protectors, and the description states plainly that it can be heard as a stand-alone. One reviewer writing from the United Kingdom treats it that way and recommends it without ever mentioning the series. Nothing in the setup requires prior listening, so starting here costs you nothing.

Who narrates the audiobook, and is this a full-cast production?

Emma Wilder holds the whole ten and a half hours, with no second narrator credited anywhere on the listing. That means one reading covers both leads, the teenage half-brother and the suspense material. Anyone who prefers dual narration for a two-lead romance should know that going in.
