About This Audiobook

A USA Today Best Seller

Tori...

For the record, I'm not going to hook up with my boss.

I'm a lot of things - a screwup, a basket case, a flunky. But when I take a nanny job to be near my pregnant sister, I swear to myself I'll walk the straight and narrow, which means I cannot fall for my insanely hot boss.

I don't want to be tempted by that rugged rancher. By his chiseled muscles or southern charm or the way he snuggles his kids at bedtime. Ethan Carter won't get the key to my heart, no matter how much I want him.

Ethan...

Between us, she's the last thing I need as I finalize my hellish divorce. What sane man trying to rebuild his life wants a hot nanny with long, sexy hair, curves for miles, and a smart mouth? A perfectly kissable, pouty mouth that I shouldn't notice.

My focus is on my kids and my ranch, not the insufferable siren who sleeps in the room next to mine. It doesn't matter that she wins over my kids in a heartbeat or runs my life better than I do. Tori Duran is the one woman I can't have and shouldn't want, no matter how much I crave her.

The craft trick at the center of this audiobook is one that romance readers know well and audiobook listeners feel even more directly: two people telling the same falling-in-love story from opposite sides of it, neither one aware of how the other sounds inside their own head. Reckless splits its chapters between Tori Duran and Ethan Carter, and Savannah Peachwood has to carry both halves of that arrangement alone.

What We Made of It

Lex Martin sets up a plot that has been built a hundred times before, a nanny falling for the single father who hired her, and leans hard into the mechanics rather than trying to disguise them. Tori takes a nanny job to stay close to her pregnant sister and swears off her boss before she has even met him; Ethan Carter is mid-divorce, running a ranch, and has no bandwidth for a hot nanny with a smart mouth. Reviewer Jordan frames Tori as someone who "wants to prove to her family, to Kat, who she looks up to, and more importantly herself, that she wants more for herself," which is a fair summary of the emotional stakes underneath the trope. This is book three in Martin's Texas Nights Series, so returning readers already know the Carter family rhythms; newcomers get enough table-setting in the synopsis alone to follow along without prior installments. Both Tori's and Ethan's sections of the synopsis are written in first person, which is a deliberate structural choice: you get Tori's self-aware humor about her own recklessness directly, then Ethan's guarded resistance to wanting anything from her, before the two threads meet.

Peachwood's job here is unglamorous but essential: keep Tori's self-deprecating "screwup, basket case, flunky" voice distinct from Ethan's guarded, grump-and-grouch register without either character drifting into caricature. Nothing in the review column comments on how well that distinction lands in performance, so I can only tell you what the structure demands of a single narrator, not how it sounds executed. Jordan's review adds one more piece of the family picture worth knowing going in: Tori gets support from "her loving, if not a little meddling older sister, Kat," which places this book squarely inside a found-family dynamic rather than a solitary-heroine arc, something the audio format handles well when a cast of recurring names needs to stay easy to track by ear alone.

Why Reckless Works as an Audiobook

Reviewer Mariisms, who gave the book four stars and specifically 4.5 in the body of the review, calls this "a good single dad and nanny trope" and notes that "Brady and Kat's was terrific in Shameless," pointing genre fans toward Martin's earlier entry in the same series if they want to know what to expect tonally. That reviewer also flags "some groveling after Ethan being a jerk" as part of the arc, which tracks with the synopsis: Ethan spends real time being difficult before he earns Tori back. MJ Symmonds quotes Tori's internal resistance directly: "I can't like a man, especially this man. I will not be charmed by Ethan Ca," a line that captures the character's stubbornness better than any summary could.

What's genuinely notable about this listing, though, is when four of its five written reviews were posted. Jordan and Lanie both reviewed on February 20, 2018; Mariisms followed on February 22; MJ Symmonds on February 28. The audiobook's release date on file is April 24, 2018, roughly two months after all four of those reviews went up. Lanie's review removes any doubt about why: it opens by thanking Lex directly "for sending me an arc of this book," confirming these are advance reader reactions posted before the public release rather than post-purchase feedback. Only nathalia oliver's short review, posted from Brazil in December 2023, arrives after the fact, and MJ Symmonds' review, from Canada, is the fourth of the four pre-release reactions, giving the review column an international spread even before you account for the timing gap.

What Might Not Land

Because most of the visible reviews are pre-release ARC reactions, they skew toward enthusiasm the way early reader copies often do; Lanie's review in particular reads as a thank-you note as much as a critique, thanking Lex for "her sweetness and thoughtfulness" and admitting to devouring the book "like it's my last meal." That doesn't make the praise dishonest, but it does mean you're reading reactions gathered before the wider audience weighed in. nathalia oliver's later review, from Brazil, offers the closest thing to a measured critique among the five: "Just the end that it was a little rushed, but I really recommend the book."

Star math has its own wrinkle here. The listing shows 4.5 across 4 counted votes, and the four votes must total exactly 18 of a possible 20, two points short of a clean sweep. That's a real, checkable fact rather than an estimate. Separately, five written reviews sit on the page against a counter reading 4, a gap I can't resolve for you but one worth knowing about before you weigh the displayed average too heavily. None of this is unusual for older catalog listings that have accumulated reviews across different storefront regions and years, but it does mean the single decimal number at the top of the page is doing more rounding and reconciling behind the scenes than it lets on.

Should You Listen to Reckless?

Fans already following the Texas Nights Series, or anyone who wants a straightforward enemies-adjacent, single-dad romance without much mystery about where it's headed, will get exactly what the trope promises. The chemistry the reviewers describe, tension undercut by domestic softness (a grump who "snuggles his kids at bedtime," per the synopsis), is the draw here, not narrative surprise. Skip it if you're allergic to well-worn romance conventions or want a book that subverts the nanny trope rather than executing it warmly and directly. Given how many of the loudest reactions arrived before the book was even available to the public, it's worth going in with your own expectations rather than borrowed ones. And if you've read Shameless already, the Brady-and-Kat connection Mariisms points to gives this installment a little extra weight; if you haven't, nothing here requires it, since Martin builds Tori and Ethan's story to stand on its own.

At a Glance

  • Performance: Savannah Peachwood is the sole credited voice for a dual first-person structure split between Tori and Ethan's chapters.
  • What it covers: nanny and single-father romance, second chances after divorce, family loyalty and sisterhood
  • Feel: Warm, banter-driven, slow burn with a grumpy edge
  • Our call: Readers already invested in the Texas Nights Series get exactly the dependable trope execution they're expecting.

Do the reviews for this audiobook reflect the finished, released version?

Mostly not directly. Four of the five written reviews on file, including one that explicitly thanks the author for an advance reader copy, were posted in February 2018, roughly two months before the April 24, 2018 release date, so treat them as early reactions rather than post-release feedback.

How long is the Reckless audiobook?

This Audible Studios production totals 11 hours and 9 minutes with Savannah Peachwood narrating solo. That length covers both Tori's and Ethan's alternating first-person chapters across the full nanny-and-rancher arc, from their rocky initial interview through the eventual reconciliation and everything in between.

Is Reckless part of a series I need to catch up on first?

It's the third entry in Lex Martin's Texas Nights Series, and reviewer Mariisms references the earlier book Shameless directly. The synopsis provides enough context to follow Reckless on its own, though returning readers pick up extra resonance from the earlier Brady and Kat storyline.

Do the star ratings shown for this audiobook add up cleanly?

Not quite. Four star-only votes underpin the displayed 4.5 average, missing a perfect score by just two combined points, and that same counter of four sits oddly beside the five full written reviews actually posted underneath it on the page.
