About This Audiobook

Dying to fit in.

High school wasn’t a grand time for everyone, but when a group of friends decide to meet up at a B and B ahead of their 10-year reunion, old grudges resurface, and one of them ends up dead. Now the owners, a kindly older couple, are on the hook for the accidental death due to anaphylaxis, but they insist no mistakes were made on their part.

Fortune is asked to look into the situation before the inept local sheriff railroads the couple or simply allows gossip to run them out of business, which will cost them their home. Swamp Team 3 heads to Voodoo Island to find a way to clear the couple and finds a complicated mess of locked doors and old secrets awaiting them. Is Voodoo Island really cursed? Or can Fortune unravel the mystery and lead her team to victory?

In Brief

  • Voice: Cassandra Campbell reads for Audible Studios, a solo credit on a book whose cast has been accumulating across twenty-seven earlier volumes.
  • Big ideas: Cozy small-town mystery, class reunion grudges, locked-room puzzle, found family.
  • Atmosphere: Comic, warm, mildly spooky around the edges.
  • Worth it?: A strong late entry for regulars, and completely the wrong place for anybody new to start.

Twenty-eight books into a series, the question stops being whether the mystery works and becomes whether the formula has anything left in it. Jana DeLeon sends Fortune and Swamp Team 3 to Voodoo Island, where a group of old friends gathering before a ten-year reunion has produced one corpse, a death by anaphylaxis, and an elderly couple facing ruin over an accident they insist they did not cause. Eleven hours of audiobook read by Cassandra Campbell, and the responses split over exactly one thing: how much comedy got traded away for plot.

What Jana DeLeon Delivers

Ten months after release, a five-star response captures the appeal precisely. It calls the book entertaining and easy to read, hard to put down, a good way to spend a relaxing weekend, credits Fortune and her aunts with keeping you guessing to the end, and flags a late plot twist it never saw coming. It also admires the way DeLeon sets you up early to believe you have worked out where the story is heading.

Locked-room structure sits underneath the comedy, which is more ambitious than a long cozy series usually bothers with. Friends gather ahead of a ten-year reunion, old grudges resurface, one of them dies of anaphylaxis, and the owners are on the hook for an accidental death they deny causing. Losing the business would cost them their home. Fortune arrives to clear them before the inept local sheriff or the local gossip finishes the job first.

Six ratings sit behind the 4.8 on this listing, and five of them carry written text, grading four, five, five, five and five. Those five total twenty-four stars between them. For the display to read 4.8 across six votes, the total has to be twenty-nine, because twenty-eight gives 4.7 and thirty gives a clean 5.0. The one rating nobody wrote up was therefore a five. Rating pools this small rarely resolve so cleanly.

What Jana DeLeon Gets Right

Weeks before the recording arrived, a five-star response from a self-described huge fan of the series made the case that matters. It reports devouring each novel quickly and finding this one carrying a poignancy and a depth of character the earlier books had not reached, still funny out loud in places, but with a real mystery and genuine emotional pull underneath it. That is a series entry doing something rather than repeating itself.

Longevity is the achievement here and it deserves respect. Twenty-eight entries means DeLeon has built a town, a recurring team and a set of running jokes that carry their own weight, so each new book starts with equity a standalone mystery never accumulates. Voodoo Island and its supposed curse hand this one a fresh setting inside a familiar frame, which is precisely how long series stay alive: change the room, keep the furniture.

Cassandra Campbell holds the reader credit on an Audible Studios production, which means one voice for Fortune, for the aunts, for an inept sheriff and for a bed and breakfast full of former classmates who all knew each other at seventeen. Comic timing is the demand a cozy makes on a reader, and it is harder than dramatic delivery, because a beat arriving half a second late kills a joke outright. Nothing on the listing indicates a full cast.

Where Jana DeLeon Loses Some Ground

Three weeks before the recording came out, a four-star response registered the only reservation on the page, and it is specific. Having read every book in the series, it finds this entry and the one before it missing some of the hijinks, which appear to have been sacrificed for actual story, and would like the balance returned to the way the books originally worked. It still laughed out loud several times and intends to keep going.

Two of the five written responses predate the audio entirely. Filed three and six weeks ahead of the November 2024 release, they describe an ebook or a printed copy, which means the two verdicts carrying the most detail about this particular entry say nothing at all about the recording. On a listing holding six ratings in total, losing the two most substantive to a different format is a meaningful hole in what a buyer can learn here.

Hygiene on this page is poor in two visible places. The description stops dead on the bare word Keywords followed by nothing, which is scaffolding somebody forgot to fill in or remove. And the categories file this under mystery, thriller and suspense while every written response describes comedy: laughing out loud, hijinks, entertaining, easy. Anybody browsing for tension will find a cozy, and anybody browsing for a cozy will never find this.

Who Should Pick Up Marsh Madness

Series regulars are the obvious audience and they are very well served. A five-star response nine months after release reports never once having been disappointed across the whole run, crediting DeLeon with connecting you to her characters and keeping the storylines believable even when belief is a stretch. Another, fifteen months out, calls it very entertaining with great characters, concedes it is maybe a little unrealistic, and intends to continue with this author regardless.

Cozy-mystery newcomers should begin further back. Twenty-eight books of running jokes, nicknames and established relationships mean the comedy here depends on recognition you will not have, and Fortune's team arrives fully formed. Forget it too if you want procedural realism, because a cozy this long-running runs on affection for its cast rather than on plausibility. And anyone drawn in by the tense, suspenseful register the category promises should adjust before pressing play.

Campbell's credit is the element that decides everything in a comedy, and DeLeon hands that reading strong material to work with. This looks like a solid late entry: a genuine locked-room puzzle, a setting carrying its own mythology, and a plot that gives the regular cast something to do besides banter. Just be clear about what the numbers are not telling you. Six ratings, five written up, two of those written before the recording existed.

Do I need the earlier Miss Fortune books before this audiobook?

Realistically yes. Twenty-eight volumes of nicknames, running jokes and established relationships mean Swamp Team 3 arrives fully assembled, and the comedy depends on already knowing these people. The central mystery is self-contained, so the plot makes sense on its own, but half the pleasure of a long cozy series is recognition.

What is Voodoo Island, and is the curse real?

It is where Swamp Team 3 heads to work the case, and the description raises the curse as a question rather than as a premise. A locked-door problem and a set of old secrets sit underneath it, which suggests the supernatural framing is atmosphere. Nothing on the page signals otherwise.

How graphic is the death in this audiobook?

Not at all, by every available signal. The victim dies of anaphylaxis at a bed and breakfast, the accusation is negligence rather than violence, and the register of the series is comic throughout. The description spends its energy on a kindly older couple facing financial ruin rather than on the body itself.

Best story yet!!

As a huge fan of the Fortune series, I quickly devour each novel. Each one has been enjoyable in its own way, but this story had a poignancy and depth about the characters that was gripping. Still laugh out loud funny at times, but with a great mystery and play...

Pretty good

I’ve read every one of these books and on this one and the last, I’m missing some of the hijinks which seem to be sacrificed for actual story. I’d like to get back to how the books were originally written. However, this still allowed me to LOL several times so...
