Half of this listing is in one language and half of it is in another. The title is English, the byline reads Lyla Sage, the series is Meadowlark and the setting is Wyoming, but the audiobook itself is in German, the description is in German, and the publisher is a German house. Whatever else you decide about this one, decide that first. What you would be buying is the translated edition, read by Nora Jokhosha, and the page does not announce that anywhere a hurried buyer is likely to look.

A Closer Look at Done and Dusted

Emmy Ryder has no idea what to do with herself for the first time in her life. A riding accident has left her unable to get back on her horse, her career is on hold, and she moves home to her family in Meadowlark, Wyoming, more reluctantly than she would admit to anyone. Waiting for her is Luke Brooks: bar owner, reformed bad boy, and currently the most eligible bachelor in town. The two of them have not seen each other in years.

What follows is the arrangement the copy advertises without a trace of embarrassment. Luke is her brother's friend, which makes him off-limits; Luke offers to help her back into the saddle, which puts him within reach every day; and the resistance collapses on a schedule anybody familiar with the shape can time to the chapter. The description names both tropes outright, He Falls First and Brother's Best Friend, and credits a debut author whose series found its audience on social video.

Four stars in January 2025 came from a reader who tracked those same beats and enjoyed them, describing Emmy as tough and independent, retreating to her family after the accident, and running into the boy she has known since childhood. That response opens with a line about choosing a new road when you dislike the one you are walking. It reads as a fair summary of the emotional contract here: the comfort lives in the predictability, and the book has no illusions about that.

What Makes Done and Dusted Worth Hearing

Small-town western romance carries a specific texture and this one commits to it completely. Rides out to waterfalls, hot kisses on summer nights, a family ranch, a bar sitting at the center of the social map. Five stars in June 2025 reached for a television comparison to explain the pull, a daughter coming back to the family ranch and falling for the man who was always already there, though that account remembers Luke as a ranch worker where the description makes him a bar owner.

That same June note is the most useful thing on the page for setting expectations about heat. It classifies the book as eighteen and over and reports that the explicit scenes begin somewhere around the midpoint and are described in detail rather than gestured at. The reader who wrote it liked that and went straight on to the second installment. If you want the level marked before you commit eight hours to it, that is your marker.

Meadowlark is numbered book one, so this is an entry point rather than a continuation, and the series carries enough momentum that at least two installments had been translated by the time one buyer went looking. For a listener whose German is comfortable without being native, a first-in-series contemporary romance is a forgiving place to be: the vocabulary stays domestic, the emotional register is loud, and no plot turn depends on catching a subtle line of dialogue.

Things to Know Before Starting Done and Dusted

Language is the first and largest thing to weigh. If you cannot follow German comfortably at conversational speed, this recording is unusable to you no matter how much you loved the English original, and an English title heading the whole listing makes that error very easy to commit. Check before you buy rather than after, because the two editions live on separate listings and only one of them is this one.

Three stars in May 2025 registered the sharpest complaint, from a reader who expected more given the hype, found the plot too predictable, and objected specifically to the absence of any safe-sex reference in a book widely read by young adults. That reader will not be continuing to the second volume. It is a substantive objection rather than a matter of taste, and worth knowing about if you pass books like this along to a teenager in the house.

The pool itself deserves a hard second look. All five written responses describe a book rather than a recording, four of them discussing the plot and the tropes at some length and the fifth running to two words. What sits under this audio listing is effectively a print edition's review page. The posted 4.2 across 281 ratings does at least match the written five exactly, five, four, five, three and four.

Who Lyla Sage Is Writing For

German-reading romance listeners who want the Meadowlark books in their own language are the plain target here, and the October 16 five-star account endorses precisely that path. It started with the English original, saw the translations appear, and reports no regret about the switch. That reader wanted to move into the town and dance in the bar, which is the correct reaction to a book built to be lived inside rather than solved.

Give it a miss if you need your romance chaste, if predictability irritates you rather than soothing you, or if you were hoping for a western with real grit under the boots. This is comfort fiction with a ranch backdrop and explicit scenes across the back half, not a story about ranching. Anyone shopping for the English recording should also stop here and go find the other listing entirely, because nothing on this one will serve.

For what it sets out to do, the book delivers on schedule and without apology, which is most of what this subgenre gets asked for. My reservation is not with the writing but with the page: a German-language recording sold under an English title, trailing an English-language review culture behind it, invites the wrong buyer through the door. Sort out which edition you are getting and the rest of it takes care of itself.

Key Details

  • Read by: Nora Jokhosha carries the book alone, and the language of the recording is the one fact a buyer has to settle before anything else.
  • At its heart: Brother's best friend, he falls first, lost nerve after injury, the small-town return.
  • Vibe: Warm and unhurried, then explicit from the midpoint on.
  • Short version: A comfortable first-in-series western romance, worth buying only if you listen in German.
