About This Audiobook

Gideon calls me his angel, but he's the miracle in my life. My gorgeous, wounded warrior, so determined to slay my demons while refusing to face his own.

The vows we'd exchanged should have bound us tighter than blood and flesh. Instead they opened old wounds, exposed pain and insecurities, and lured bitter enemies out of the shadows. I felt him slipping from my grasp, my greatest fears becoming my reality, my love tested in ways I wasn't sure I was strong enough to bear.

At the brightest time in our lives, the darkness of his past encroached and threatened everything we'd worked so hard for. We faced a terrible choice: the familiar safety of the lives we'd had before each other or the fight for a future that suddenly seemed an impossible and hopeless dream...

  • Narration: A Brilliance Audio production credited to Jill Redfield alone, with no second reader listed for either half of the account
  • Themes: A marriage under pressure, damage carried in from the past, enemies drawn out by a public union
  • Mood: Close, charged, claustrophobic
  • Verdict: The fourth volume rewards the three before it and will strand anybody who starts here.

Crossfire reached its fourth volume with this audiobook, and the listing says so plainly in the series field, which matters more here than on most romance pages. Twelve hours and thirteen minutes of a continuing story is not a place to arrive cold. Sylvia Day wrote a book that assumes you already know why two people flinch the way they do, and the description makes no effort to catch you up. It opens mid-thought, in the first person, with one half of a marriage describing the other as a wounded warrior and a miracle in the same breath.

The Verdict, Briefly

Gideon is the engine of the fourth volume, and the response that best explains why credits the addition of his point of view with turning interest into obsession. The description supports that reading. The vows opened old wounds instead of closing them, exposed pain and insecurities, and lured bitter enemies out of the shadows, which is a lot of consequence for a wedding. That same response describes two broken people who happen to be right for each other if they can survive what the rest of the world throws at them, and it puts a finger on the exact mechanism driving the plot: one of them keeps bad news to himself in order to protect an evening, and the protection is what does the damage.

One credit covers the whole of a book written from inside a single consciousness. The description never steps outside that voice for a sentence, which is unusual for sales copy and signals where the value is meant to sit: not in event, but in proximity. Jill Redfield holds the narrator credit alone. A first-person romance at this length asks for something more particular than characterization, which is the ability to stay close without becoming wearing, and to keep an intimate register from flattening into one tone across a very long file. The tag on this listing is erotica, so a fair share of that register is explicit, and explicit material read aloud is among the least forgiving things a solo reader can be handed.

Why Listen to Captivated by You

Romance series that run past their planned length usually thin out, and this one has an answer to that problem built into its structure. The fourth volume changes whose interior you occupy rather than inventing a new external obstacle. The vows are already exchanged when the book opens, so what follows is not a courtship but a marriage under pressure, with the past encroaching at the brightest time in the couple's life and the choice narrowing toward the familiar safety of the lives they had before each other. Books four and five of a romance sequence usually have nowhere to go. This one went inward. That maneuver is far cheaper to attempt than to pull off, and whether it works for you will depend on how much patience you have for a couple who keep solving the same problem at a steadily rising emotional cost.

Fans arriving late should know what one response, the one that remembers the sequence being announced as a trilogy, sets out clearly: a fourth book exists because readers were not ready to stop at the third, and at the time that response was written the story still had not finished. Nothing on this listing says whether a fifth volume closed it. What the listing does tell you is that you are buying an installment, and the last line of the description, an impossible and hopeless dream trailing off into an ellipsis, is not the punctuation of a book that resolves anything.

Points to Consider

Readers who want plot machinery will find it thinner than the emotional weather. The description promises bitter enemies drawn out of the shadows and a terrible choice, and both of those are genuinely present, but the center of gravity sits where the earlier volumes put it: two people managing damage in a room. If that is what you came for, a fourth volume has more room for it than a first meeting ever could, because by now you know what each flinch costs. If you came for escalation, the escalation here is interior rather than external, and interior escalation is easy to mistake for nothing happening.

Four different national storefronts are represented among the five written responses on this page, and two of those responses are not in English. All of them sit under a single average, which means the number at the top pools reactions to different editions, bought in different markets, written in different languages, with no way for a buyer to weight them. The only response that withholds the top grade is one of the two not in English, which also makes it the least usable of the set for somebody reading the page in English. None of that is anybody's fault. It does mean the score is a weaker instrument here than it looks.

The Right Listener for Captivated by You

Newcomers are not who this is for, and the listing is honest enough to say so by putting a number in the series field. This is for people who have already spent three books with these two and want a fourth angle on the same wound, and for listeners who specifically want the erotic register handled at length rather than used as punctuation between plot beats. The tag on this page is not decorative. If that register is the reason you are here, the fourth volume gives it more room than the setup volumes could. Listeners who prefer a long single-voice book to a produced cast are well served too, since nothing in the structure asks for one and no scene ever needs handing off mid-sentence.

Starting here is a mistake, and not an easily recoverable one, since the opening assumes a marriage, a history and a set of enemies you have not met. Skipping past the explicit material is not an option either, so anybody browsing for mainstream contemporary romance is on the wrong shelf. A listener who needs a story to end inside the book they bought should also check where the sequence stands before committing to a long fourth installment. Whether you love this one will come down almost entirely to whether the three before it left you wanting more of the interior and less of the incident.

Can I start the Captivated by You audiobook without the earlier Crossfire books?

Not comfortably. The listing marks this as the fourth Crossfire volume, and the description opens inside an established marriage with the vows already exchanged and the enemies already circling. No recap is offered anywhere on the page. Twelve hours and thirteen minutes is a long stretch to spend reconstructing a history you could have had in order.

Who narrates the audiobook, and is there a second reader?

Jill Redfield is the sole reader credited, so one voice carries the entire book. Brilliance Audio made the recording in November 2014. Nothing on the page indicates a duet format, a second reader or a full cast, which is worth knowing for a book written in the first person.

How explicit is this audiobook?

The listing carries an erotica tag rather than a general romance one, and that is the clearest signal available. The description itself stays fairly restrained, but the shelf placement is the page's own classification and it is more reliable than a blurb. Plan accordingly if you tend to listen with other people in the car.

Does the story finish in this volume?

The description closes on an unresolved choice and trails off into an ellipsis rather than landing, and the series fields mark this as volume four without naming a total. Nothing on the page presents it as a finale. It is an installment in a continuing story, and the listing is honest about that much.

So worth Waiting For - loved Gideon & Eva even more than before
