About This Audiobook

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

No one knows you like your sister. She can make you laugh or break your heart with a single word. And no one writes novels like Kristin Hannah, an author who vividly explores the intricate bonds of family and, as Tami Hoag said “touches the deepest, most tender corners of our heart.” Now, in her rich, captivating new book, she creates an indelible portrait of two women, once lost to each other, about to come together in a time of exquisite joy and almost unbearable sadness. Sisters by blood, strangers by choice, each stands at a crossroads, ready to confront the betrayals of the past....

BETWEEN SISTERS

Meghann Dontess is a woman haunted by heartbreak. Twenty-five years ago she was forced to make a terrible choice, one that cost her everything, including the love of her sister, Claire. Now, Meghann is a hotshot divorce attorney who doesn’t believe in intimacy - until she meets the one man who can change her mind.

Claire Cavenaugh has fallen in love for the first time in her life. As her wedding day approaches, she prepares to face her harsh, judgmental older sister and their self-absorbed mother. It is the first time they have been together in more than two decades. Over the course of a hot Pacific Northwest summer, these three women who believe they have nothing in common will try to become what they never were: a family.

Tender, funny, bittersweet, and wonderfully moving, Between Sisters celebrates the joys and heartaches that can only be shared by sisters, the mistakes made in the name of love and the healing power of new beginnings - all beautifully told by acclaimed author Kristin Hannah.

Key Details

  • Narrator: Laural Merlington reads eleven hours of domestic fiction that lives almost entirely in dialogue between two sisters and their mother.
  • Subjects: Estrangement, a wedding that forces a reunion, a self-absorbed mother, forgiveness arriving late
  • Tone: Warm and deliberately wrenching
  • Bottom line: Exactly what it promises for readers who want family damage handled with care, and no use at all to anyone who wants ambiguity.

Kristin Hannah's audience found this audiobook eighteen years after it was recorded, and that is the first thing the record tells you. Brilliance Audio published it in October 2008, Laural Merlington is the credited reader, and all five written responses on the page were filed inside a six-week window in January and February 2026. Something sent a wave of new readers toward an old novel, and most of what they wrote is about the author rather than about this book. Eleven hours and forty minutes covers two estranged sisters, a wedding, and a self-absorbed mother the copy introduces without a shred of affection.

Meghann's Old Choice Still Costs Her

Meghann Dontess is a divorce attorney who does not believe in intimacy, a setup that can go badly, and the novel's saving move is that the copy tells you why immediately: twenty-five years ago she was forced into a choice that cost her everything, her sister included. A January 25, 2026 five-star opens by counting three sisters of its own before claiming no author is better qualified for this material, then closes by naming a different Hannah novel as the one that started it all. Both halves of that response are useful. The first tells you who the book is for. The second tells you how the reader arrived.

Claire Cavenaugh carries the other half and draws the easier assignment: falling in love for the first time, then facing a wedding with a judgmental older sister and a self-absorbed mother in attendance. The copy promises the three of them will try to become what they have never been, over one hot Pacific Northwest summer. That summer is the container for everything, and the structure is the oldest one in family fiction, which is to put people who cannot talk into a house with a deadline attached. The copy also pairs exquisite joy with almost unbearable sadness in the same sentence, so you know roughly where the cost is coming.

Eleven Hours Where You Cannot Skim Ahead

Weddings in this genre are a delivery mechanism for reunions nobody wants, and Hannah uses this one precisely that way. The February 26 five-star gets the appeal into thirteen words, praising the real interactions between the two sisters and the way the book keeps you reading and wanting more. That is the engine, stated plainly. The pleasure on offer is watching two women who know each other's worst moments try to be polite, then fail, then try again, with a ceremony bearing down on both of them and a mother making everything harder. Hannah is unusually good at the specific cruelty available only to relatives, the remark that costs nothing to say and takes ten years to undo, and the book keeps finding fresh ways to stage it.

Eleven hours and forty minutes is the right size for this, and audio suits family fiction better than it suits almost any other kind, because the form is conversational and the emotional turns arrive in dialogue rather than in description. Anyone new to Hannah should take the copy at its word about the tone, though. This is a book engineered to make you cry at a specific point, and a recording quietly removes your ability to skim ahead and brace for it. That is either the reason to choose the audio edition or the reason to avoid it, depending on how you like to be handled. The register swings between comic and devastating inside single scenes, which the publisher admits when it calls the book tender, funny and bittersweet in one breath.

Most of These Reviews Praise the Catalog

Several of these responses are not really about this novel at all, which is easy to miss under a star average. The most enthusiastic five-star describes clearing the author's entire catalog inside six months, praises the research and detail visible in each novel, and describes a love of historical fiction, which fits Hannah's later work and does not fit this one. Between Sisters is contemporary family fiction with no historical apparatus anywhere in it. Read the column as a verdict on an author, because that is what most of it is.

Blurbs on the record have the same shape. The description quotes praise about touching the deepest, most tender corners of our heart and attributes it to Tami Hoag, but the line is about Kristin Hannah in general rather than about this novel, which is ordinary publishing practice and still worth naming on a page where a buyer is trying to judge one title. A five-word entry filed on February 23, under a misspelled version of the book's own name, says only that the author does not disappoint. None of that is dishonest. All of it explains why a star average here measures loyalty more accurately than it measures this particular book. None of that makes the novel worse. It does mean a buyer should read the description and take a sample rather than trust the badge, since the badge is aggregating enthusiasm for a whole career.

Cynics Should Stay Well Away

Fans of the author are the obvious audience and they have already arrived, as the column demonstrates. Beyond them, this suits anyone who reads for family damage rather than for plot: sisters who have not spoken in decades, mothers who take up all the available air, weddings that force a reckoning nobody scheduled. The one four-star, filed February 7, recommends it in a single line as a good story about separated sisters and a quick read, which is a fair account of the register. Nobody is being challenged here. People are being moved, deliberately and competently, by a writer who knows how. That is a legitimate thing for a book to set out to do, and it is harder to bring off than the people who sneer at it tend to assume.

Cynics should stay away, and so should anyone who came to Hannah through the historical novels expecting that scope, because this is a domestic book with three women and one summer in it. Listeners who need moral ambiguity will find the emotional accounting tidier than life generally manages. What sits underneath is a well-built, unembarrassed novel about two people who broke something between them and are handed one chance to look at it directly. For a week of dog walks in the company of that kind of book, eleven hours is not much to ask.

How old is the Between Sisters audiobook recording, and who reads it?

Laural Merlington reads it, at eleven hours and forty minutes, on a recording Brilliance Audio issued in October 2008. That is a moderate commitment by the standards of family fiction, and the structure follows the two sisters in turn, which makes stopping and restarting straightforward.

How emotionally heavy is this audiobook?

Heavy by design. The publisher promises heartache alongside the joy, and the plot turns on a choice made twenty-five years earlier that cost one sister everything she had. The record carries no content note, so expect grief, family rupture and a reconciliation that is earned rather than handed over.
