About This Audiobook

They say when you assume that you make an ass out of you and me. Kenton Mayson learned this lesson firsthand when he made assumptions about Autumn Freeman and the kind of woman she is based on what little information he had. What he finds out is she’s not only beautiful but also smart, funny, a fighter, and exactly the kind of woman he wants to share his life with. Autumn made assumptions of her own about Kenton, and now he needs to prove her wrong in order to protect her and their future.

Warning: Please be aware that the content of this book may be difficult for some. This book is intended for audiences 18 and over due to violence and sexual encounters.

"They say when you assume that you make an ass out of you and me," the synopsis opens, and this audiobook spends its entire runtime proving the saying right from two directions at once, using that familiar wordplay as an actual structural device rather than a throwaway line on the back cover. Kenton Mayson assumes he already knows exactly what kind of woman Autumn Freeman is before he has actually taken the time to meet her properly, and Autumn returns the favor with assumptions of her own about Kenton, so Aurora Rose Reynolds builds the whole conflict out of two people who have to unlearn their first impressions of each other. Dreamscape Media released this one in June 2023, running seven hours and twenty-two minutes, enough time for both halves of that title pun to play out in full before the story resolves into whatever peace Kenton and Autumn manage to reach with each other by the end.

The Verdict, Briefly

This is book one of the Underground Kings Series, but Jennifer's review makes clear it also connects sideways into Reynolds's existing Until Series: "The Hero in this story is the cousin of the Heroes in the other books," a spin-off structure that rewards existing readers without technically requiring them, since Jennifer's own review adds that new readers "DON'T need to read" the earlier books first, even while admitting a genuine curiosity to go back and read the Until Series after finishing this one. The listing carries an explicit content warning, intended for audiences eighteen and over due to violence and sexual encounters, which is worth taking at face value rather than as boilerplate, given how much of the plot Kenton and Autumn's synopsis hinges on protecting Autumn from real danger rather than just romantic tension. Donna Ferriola's review fills in some of that danger directly: Autumn witnesses five people getting gunned down at the strip club where she works in Las Vegas, then escapes with help from Lincoln, the club's bouncer, who enlists a friend in Tennessee willing to protect her, a friend the review identifies as Kenton himself.

Why Assumption Works as an Audiobook

Fiona Aarington narrates, and the pull here comes from the two leads themselves: Malinda's review admits Kenton was "a bit of a jerk at first" before he "quickly grew on me," a slow-turn arc rather than an instant romantic hero, while the same review builds out Autumn's backstory around a mother whose abuse left her guarded, someone who treats her own beauty as "a curse" as often as an asset. That review also praises the pacing directly, noting the story "kept me engaged to the point that I had a hard time putting it down to go to sleep," a specific, physical description of momentum rather than a vague compliment about the book being good. Shivangi Sinha's review, the most complete of the five on this listing, calls the pairing of "the dominating and suave Kenton" against "the fearless yet emotionally damaged Autumn" an awesome couple and specifically praises the chemistry between them as both endearing and intense, adding that Reynolds "has written it well and has done an amazing job" without hedging that praise anywhere in the review.

Points to Consider

Four of the five written reviews cut off mid-sentence, and in two cases mid-word, right in the listing: Jennifer's stops at "the ot," Malinda's at "her looks," and Donna Ferriola's at "not h." That is an unusually high truncation rate for a five-review set, and it means several of the most interesting plot details, how Autumn actually ends up protected in Tennessee, what exactly happens the night everything between her and Kenton changes for good, are cut off before the reviewer finishes explaining them. Addicted2Romance's review, which carries no title at all in the listing, is the fourth to end this way, breaking off right as it starts describing a scene where Kenton "finds himself in the ER one night" and sees Autumn's face again under circumstances the review never gets to specify. Donna Ferriola's review also spells the setting "LasVagas" rather than Las Vegas, a small but real typo worth knowing about if you go looking for that review yourself and wonder whether you have the right one. None of the five reviews raise any complaint about pacing or the central romance itself; every objection on this listing, where one exists at all, is about an unfinished sentence rather than an unfinished story.

Should You Listen to Assumption?

Readers already following Reynolds's Until Series who want to see a cousin's story told in parallel, and anyone comfortable going in knowing the mature-content warning applies, are the clearest audience for this one. Listeners drawn to romantic suspense specifically, rather than pure contemporary romance, will find the club shooting and hideout plot Donna Ferriola's review describes gives the book real stakes beyond the central relationship, closer to a protection arc than a purely domestic slow burn between two people who already feel safe with each other. Fans of a slow-turn hero, someone who starts out unlikable before earning the reader's investment, will recognize the arc Malinda's review describes in Kenton specifically, and that same patience pays off according to every review that manages to reach a real conclusion about the couple. Skip it if truncated reviews make it hard for you to judge a listing with confidence, since four of the five available here end before finishing their own thought, or if you would rather avoid a book that leans on real danger and an abusive-mother backstory as part of its central romance rather than keeping the darker material offscreen entirely. For listeners already invested in the Underground Kings world Reynolds is building, Assumption sets up a spin-off series with real connective tissue to what came before it, rather than borrowing the Until Series name purely for marketing purposes.

A Few Questions About Assumption

What kind of content warning does this audiobook carry?

The listing flags mature content on two specific fronts, violence and sexual encounters, and states the book suits readers eighteen and older only. That warning reflects real plot elements, including the danger Autumn faces over the course of the story, rather than existing as generic disclaimer language.

How is Autumn's character described across this audiobook's five reviews?

Reviewers describe her as beautiful, guarded, and shaped by an abusive mother who left her wary of trusting people close to her. One review specifically calls her both fearless and emotionally damaged, treating those two traits as equally central to who she is.
