About This Audiobook

All Mayumi ever wanted was to hunt Demons.

After being discharged from the Demonslayer guild, Mayumi chose to isolate herself within the forest. The best place to hunt and kill Demons. But, one night, she’s surprised when a different monster is lured by her baits.

Just before she unleashes an arrow that’s aimed to kill, Mayumi pauses. She realises she’s seen that skulled, feline face before and that it had once saved her life.

All Faunus ever wanted was her.

After the Demon King cracked his skull, Faunus returns to watch over the only human he has ever cared for. He knows what his future holds, she would never become his bride, but he wants to spend what remains of his life protecting her.

He never expected that she would ever befriend him, or that she would openly desire him. She’s as fiery as her burning passion, and he’s desperate to let her consume him.

But his time in this world grows short, and Faunus doesn’t know how he can be with Mayumi when he knows nothing will save him.

Opal Reyne appears twice in the credit block of this audiobook, once as the author and once as the publisher. Whatever arrangement sits behind that, no third party is recorded anywhere on the listing, and the effect ripples outward: no imprint standing behind the release date, no marketing apparatus generating the description, and a review column that turns out to have been assembled long before this recording existed. Book three of the Duskwalker Brides is a case study in what an independently released romance listing does and does not tell a listener.

First, the Big Picture

Mayumi wanted one thing, which was to hunt Demons, and after being discharged from the Demonslayer guild she took herself into the forest to keep doing it alone. Her baits attract something other than a Demon: Faunus, a skulled feline face she recognizes, because it once saved her life. He returns because the Demon King cracked his skull and his time is running out, and he wants to spend what remains of it watching over the only human he has ever cared for. She was never going to become his bride. She befriends him anyway, and then wants him.

Four dates out of five sit ahead of the recording itself. The audio is dated March 24, 2025. Their entries carry the dates February 24, 2023, April 9, 2023, August 3, 2023 and July 24, 2024, and only one arrival, on March 28, 2025, falls after publication. So this page was assembled around a text that had been circulating for two years before anyone put a voice to it, which is the single most useful thing to know before you read a word of it.

What those responses agree on is Mayumi. The reader who signs VN calls her "by far my favorite Duskwalker bride" and lists the reasons in a run of adjectives, bossy and confident and prideful and sassy among them. Lily U., the lone four, opens with "Mayumi is the definition of a strong and independent woman who takes care of herself" and then praises the part where that stops working, the stretch where she is forced to accept help. Two readers, one grade apart, describing the same arc.

Why Listen to A Soul to Touch

Wolfgang Milliken holds the reading credit, alone, across 18 hours and 35 minutes of a story that runs on two interiors: a hunter who wanted nothing but the work, and a monster counting down what is left of his life. No response addresses the performance, and this time the reason is documented, and not mysterious at all. Four of the five were written years before the audio appeared. The silence in this column is not indifference; it is a chronology.

The badge reads 4.6 across eight votes, which fixes the pile at 37 points against a ceiling of 40. The missing three are easy to place. One of them is visible: the written grades run 5, 5, 4, 5, 5, so the single four-star response accounts for exactly one point. The remaining two sit with the three people who voted and never wrote, which makes the unwritten part of this column the slightly harsher part, though not by much.

Heat is the other thing worth settling in advance, and one respondent does the work for you. Hoobasta, writing under a spoiler warning, puts it at "a 4.5 /5" and adds that the scenes vary instead of repeating, getting more adventurous as the book goes on. VN's description of Mayumi includes an adjective that leaves no ambiguity about register. This is explicit romance with a monster love interest, and nothing in the listing is coy about it.

A Few Reservations

This is the third Duskwalker Brides book and the listing does nothing to catch you up. VN is explicit about having finished the first two before arriving here, and treats that as the reason the payoff landed. Chelsea Evans opens on "Always a 5 star with The Duskwalker Brides," so that is a returning reader too, and adds a second useful fact: this is the only Reyne series that reviewer has tried. The description assumes you already know what a Duskwalker is and never once says.

Reviewers also use vocabulary the description never introduces. Brandie's entire response turns on the fact that the story "wasn't set in the veil" and celebrates the change of scene away from "the dark gloomy veil." Nothing in the copy mentions a veil, so a newcomer first meets that term inside a review rather than inside the book's own summary. Lily U. supplies another, calling Faunus by a nickname the description does not use. Taken together, the reviews carry more of this world's furniture than the official summary does, which is a strange way for a listing to work.

Faunus is dying, and the description says so in plain terms: his time in this world grows short, and he knows nothing will save him. Romance readers who need certainty about how that resolves will not get it from the listing, though the column offers a broad hint, since one entry mentions knowing a happy ending had to arrive. All five bodies stop mid-sentence at what looks like a shared character limit, one of them mid-praise and one mid-word, so the reasoning behind several of these grades never reaches the page at all. Read them for enthusiasm; do not read them for argument.

Should You Listen to A Soul to Touch?

The audience is romantasy listeners who want the monster to stay a monster, plus anyone already inside this series looking for the volume its own readers rate highest. At 18 hours and 35 minutes this is a real commitment, and the column suggests the time goes on interior work more than on incident: emotional handling, a childhood that shaped a hunter, a creature negotiating with his own humanity. Anyone who reads for a slow, argued attachment between two people who should not want each other will find the length is the point.

Steer clear if a skulled, feline, non-human love interest is a line you would rather not cross, because the book is entirely built on it. Steer clear if explicit content is unwelcome, given where the one heat score lands. And steer clear if you want reviews written about this recording, since the dates put nearly all of them elsewhere. Book three assumes you already love these two, and every response here was written by somebody who did.

Quick Take

  • Voice: Wolfgang Milliken is credited alone for 18 hours and 35 minutes, and the review dates explain why nobody discusses the reading.
  • Big ideas: Monster romance, enemies to lovers by way of rescue, mortality, found trust, an isolated hunter.
  • Atmosphere: Dark, tender and explicit, with a countdown running underneath.
  • Worth it?: The strongest entry in the series according to its own readers, provided a non-human love interest and high heat are what you want.

Can I start the Duskwalker Brides series at book three?

You can, but the column is written by returning readers. One respondent credits finishing the first two books with making the payoff land, and another opens by treating a five-star grade for this series as routine. The description never explains what a Duskwalker is, so a newcomer assembles the world from context.

How explicit is this audiobook?

Very. The only person here who scores it puts the heat at four and a half out of five, under a spoiler warning, and reports that the encounters change shape as the book proceeds. A second entry describes the lead in language that removes any doubt. Assume graphic content throughout.

Why are most reviews dated before the audiobook was released?

The recording carries a March 2025 release date, while four entries in the column are dated between February 2023 and July 2024. They were aimed at the text, never at this production, which is also why none of them mentions the reading or the running time.

What does the record say about the narration?

Only the credit itself. Wolfgang Milliken is listed as the sole reader for a story that alternates between two perspectives across more than eighteen hours. No cast list, no abridgement note and no listener commentary exist here, so the performance is the one thing you cannot research in advance.
