About This Audiobook

Controlled. Desperate. Working against the clock.

Axel Font has escaped the fate that the corrupt judge had set for him through a metaphorical deal with a demon. Unfortunately for him, that means he needs to track down and stop an actual demon and her contractor, as well as remove some members of the Nexus organisation that seem to have gone rogue. But while he races the clock, mysterious forces are moving behind the scenes, seeking to solve the city's ever-present resource problem through any means. Even if it means reaching for powers that are better left alone.

If Axel wants to return to life as a free man, sort out what he feels about the cheerful archeologist, Rhys, and help protect his growing menagerie of adoptive children, he's going to have to complete Nexus' deal...

And then stop them himself.

Axel Font has escaped a corrupt judge's sentence through what the description calls a metaphorical deal with a demon, and now he has to stop a literal one. That is the setup for the back half of a duology, and this audiobook is where it concludes: ten hours and four minutes, read by John Pirhalla for Podium Audio, on sale since March 17, 2026. The two written responses attached to the page arrived in October and November 2025, four and five months ahead of that date. Both award five stars. Both are discussing a text they read, because the file underneath them did not exist yet.

What Tobias Begley Delivers

Effaced is the title of the first book, and it appears nowhere in this record's own fields. The series line reads Secret Records of Axel Font (Duology) and the number reads 2, while volume one is identified only inside a five-star, the one describing a murder mystery turned magical political thriller that started in Effaced and concludes here with a blast. That is a real gap for anybody arriving from a search. A duology's closing volume is the worst possible place to begin, and the page that ought to route a buyer to the opening one has left the job to a reader who happened to name it in passing.

Nexus is the organization Axel owes, and the plot is a stack of overlapping debts rather than a quest. He has to track down a demon and her contractor, remove members of Nexus who appear to have gone rogue, and complete the deal that bought his freedom before he can turn on the people who set it. Meanwhile something else is moving to solve what the copy calls the city's ever-present resource problem by reaching for powers better left alone. Three pressures, one clock, and a protagonist the description sums up before the plot even begins: controlled, desperate, working against time.

What Makes The Restored Worth Hearing

Rhys, the cheerful archeologist, is a large part of why this sits in the category it sits in. The description leaves Axel three things to resolve and one of them is what he feels about Rhys, which puts a slow-burning romance inside a magical thriller rather than the reverse. The other two are his freedom and the growing menagerie of adoptive children he is trying to protect, so the emotional stakes are found family and an unadmitted attachment, both carried through a story about demons and municipal resource politics. Anyone arriving for the queer romance should know how much plot it shares those hours with.

Pirhalla carries the whole recording for Podium Audio, and the material asks for range rather than force: a first-person operator talking through his own scheming, a demon and her contractor, an organization of colleagues who may be about to become enemies, a household of adoptive children, and Rhys. Both written responses predate the recording by months, so the praise in them belongs to the writing that produced those voices. What the description makes plain by itself is how much one reader has to carry, which is fair to weigh when a city, an underworld and a household all rest on the same voice for the length of a working day.

Things to Know Before Starting The Restored

Dates are the first thing to check here, and they do not line up. The recording went on sale March 17, 2026. The five-star headed A wonderful conclusion! was filed November 18, 2025. The one headed A thrilling conclusion to an epic series! was filed October 25, 2025. Neither reader could have heard a minute of this file. Both reactions are honest about the book, and both sit inside the 5.0 badge heading this record, alongside ten further grades that carry no text whatever. A perfect score across twelve votes is a small sample wearing the clothes of a consensus.

Genre fields are the second problem. The only category on this record is LGBTQ+, and no tag has been attached at all. Nothing tells a browsing buyer that this involves demons, other planes, a murder mystery, magical politics or a city running short of resources, which is precisely what both responses describe and what the description spends its entire length on. Someone searching urban fantasy will never meet this book. Someone browsing within LGBTQ+ meets it with no idea what kind of story it is. On a second volume that already depends on a first, that is one obstacle too many.

Who Should Pick Up The Restored

Found family is the engine running under the plot, and readers who respond to that will be well served: a protagonist whose freedom is conditional, a house of adoptive children he is trying to keep alive, and an attachment he has not admitted to himself. Anyone who finished the first book already knows whether they want this one; both people who wrote in call it a conclusion and both sound satisfied, one reporting a thorough enjoyment of the duology and an inability to recommend it enough. Listeners who like their fantasy municipal, full of organizations, contracts and shortages, will find the worldbuilding doing real work.

Twelve grades, two of them explained, and both of those written months ahead of release: that is the whole evidence base. What it supports is a strong finish to a two-book story that the people who read it enjoyed. What it cannot support is any claim about this particular edition. Track down Effaced first, since the record declines to point anyone toward it, and read the 5.0 for what it is, a dozen readers agreeing about a story rather than a verdict on a recording.

Where does the romance land on the heat scale in this audiobook?

The record gives no indication. No tag, no content note, and a description that goes no further than Axel sorting out what he feels about the cheerful archeologist. Neither written response raises the subject either, so heat level is one thing this page simply will not tell you.

Who released this audiobook, and how long does it run?

Podium Audio issued it on March 17, 2026, at a little over ten hours. That is a single long day of listening for the closing half of a two-book story, and no companion material or bonus content is listed alongside it.

Will the story make sense if I read Effaced a while ago?

Probably. The description reestablishes the essentials in its opening lines: the corrupt judge, the bargain that bought Axel's freedom, the debt still owed to Nexus. What it does not recap is the murder mystery those first pages resolved, which one reader treats as the foundation of everything here.

Does the story actually finish here, or is another volume coming?

It finishes. The series field says duology and gives this the number two, both headlines on the page use the word conclusion, and the description's last line has Axel completing the deal and then stopping Nexus himself. No third title appears in any field.
