About This Audiobook

When ER physician Sloane Marshall is called in as a last-minute replacement for a federal outreach mission in the remote mountain town of Coulter’s Gap, she views the temporary assignment as an unwelcome interruption in her “real” work of actually saving lives.

Jax Kincaid, a sharp-edged helicopter pilot and former Army flight medic, is tasked with medical evacuations and disaster logistics. She's none too happy about a lead physician who's never been to battle, and the increasingly worsening storm predictions might turn out to be just that.

In the month leading up to a catastrophic natural disaster, Sloane and Jax forge an uneasy partnership that begins as mutual respect and turns into something neither expected. Swept Away is a high-stakes romance about survival, second chances, and the unexpected power of revealing our most secret desires. A First Responders Romance.

Coulter's Gap gets a federal medical team, a helicopter pilot with combat evacuation behind her, and a forecast that keeps worsening. Radclyffe gives the audiobook a full month before the water arrives, which is unusually patient structuring for a disaster romance: the catastrophe is announced in the description's first paragraph and then made to wait. Bold Strokes released the recording on March 11, 2026, with Lula Larkin reading ten hours and twenty-five minutes.

Two Ice Queens, and a Storm Bound for North Carolina

Andrea, writing the day before publication, reaches the thing that makes this work: both leads are a little bit of ice queens, with Sloane the icier of the two. Both are complex, both carry a backstory that explains the reluctance, and the tension and chemistry get an unambiguous verdict. That response also supplies a detail the description withholds, placing the rural town in North Carolina, where storms and potential flooding are coming to residents already short of almost everything.

Sloane and Jax's Antagonism, With a Storm Closing In

Sloane Marshall arrives resenting the posting. The copy is blunt about it: she treats a federal outreach mission as an unwelcome interruption in her real work of actually saving lives, with the quotation marks doing considerable labor. Jax Kincaid is unimpressed by a lead physician who has never been to battle. That is a professional antagonism rather than a manufactured misunderstanding, and it holds because both positions are defensible, which happens less often in this subgenre than it should.

Storm predictions supply the clock. Everything the two of them build across that month is provisional, and the copy tells you a catastrophic natural disaster is coming, so you spend ten hours watching people raise emergency hospitals and housing while knowing what will test them. Audio suits that specific dread, because you cannot let your eye slide down the page to check who is still standing afterward.

Both Armored Women, Silent Across Ten Hours

Maria, writing on March 13, identifies the emotional engine exactly: both leads have lost someone in traumatic circumstances, and both concluded afterward that attachment is not worth the risk of losing again. Two people shut in the same way is a harder setup than the usual mismatch, since neither is available to do the pursuing, and that response found it unusual and effective. It also gives the slow burn a reason to be slow beyond genre convention.

Interiority is what one reader has to carry across ten hours and twenty-five minutes. Both protagonists are women, both are professionally armored, both spend the book declining to say the thing, and the romance happens almost entirely in what goes unvoiced. Keeping those two silences distinguishable is the job, and the relief material underneath, evacuations and triage and a town without resources, demands a completely different register in the same file.

Revealing our most secret desires is how the description signs off, immediately after survival and second chances, and that line is the page's only signal about heat level. No content note appears anywhere on the record. For a book filed under three genres at once, LGBTQ+, literary fiction and romance, one adjective in the closing sentence is the whole of the disclosure, which is thin for buyers who decide on that basis.

Undefined 'T,' an ARC, and an Unnumbered Series

Aleana Harris, writing on March 10, opens by disclosing an ARC copy received from the publisher through NetGalley, and files a day before publication. That is honest practice, and it is worth knowing as you read the column: two of the five entries here predate the release date, so the earliest enthusiasm on this page comes from copies handed out rather than bought. The summary that follows is faithful to the description, down to the days spent teaching and running the medical operation.

Heat level is the next thing to check, and the page fumbles it. The Readers, writing on March 15, enjoyed the adventure and the adrenaline, then notes that this one comes with a little less T than usual, abbreviating whatever T stands for and never expanding it. Regular readers of this author will decode it instantly. Everybody else gets a four-star grade attached to a comparison they have no way of making.

Nothing on this record says where the book falls in its series. The field reads First Responders Series with an empty number beside it, while the description signs off calling itself A First Responders Romance. Whether this is the first entry, the fourth or a loosely connected standalone is a question the page declines to answer, and for series romance that is the single fact a buyer most wants before starting.

Triage and Evacuation Logistics Are the Real Pleasure

Buy this one if the disaster procedural interests you as much as the courtship, because the balance leans that way through the first half. The March 11 response describes the appeal accurately: search and rescue after a disaster, emergency hospitals and housing going up for victims, a slow burn between two people afraid to love because they are afraid of losing, and characters likable enough to carry the distance. That is a fair account of what ten hours delivers.

Competence is the unfashionable pleasure this one delivers best, and it deserves naming. Two women who are extremely good at difficult jobs are allowed to be good at them at length: triage decisions, evacuation logistics, a clinic assembled out of nothing in a town that has nothing. Readers who reached the genre through medical drama rather than through romance will find the professional half as satisfying as the personal one, and it never gets waved through on the way to the next kiss.

Steer clear if you want a light contemporary romance, since the opening half is procedural and the emotional stakes rest on grief. Anybody joining the series who needs to begin at the beginning will have to find the running order somewhere other than this page. For everyone else, an unhurried sapphic romance with two competent, guarded leads and a real emergency underneath is exactly what the description promises and what the column confirms.

  • Voice: Lula Larkin is the only voice on a file Bold Strokes put out on publication day, and nobody else is credited alongside: no second voice, no sound design, no storm effects.
  • Big ideas: Slow-burn sapphic romance, grief and self-protection, disaster relief and triage, professional respect turning into something else
  • Atmosphere: Tense and patient, with a countdown running quietly under the courtship
  • Worth it?: Two guarded, competent leads and a month-long countdown make for a satisfying slow burn, provided a procedural first half is what you want.

What kind of disaster does the Swept Away audiobook build toward?

The description names worsening storm predictions and a catastrophic natural disaster arriving after a month of preparation, with medical evacuations and disaster logistics as Jax's assignment. The copy stops short of naming the event itself, so the specifics reach you inside the book rather than on the page before you buy.

Who are the two leads?

Sloane Marshall is an ER physician pulled in as a last-minute replacement on a federal outreach mission she resents. Jax Kincaid is a helicopter pilot and former Army flight medic handling evacuations and disaster logistics, unimpressed by a lead physician who has never been to battle. Both are women.

Why does this audiobook carry a literary fiction genre as well as romance?

The record carries three genres at once, LGBTQ+, literary fiction and romance, with Romance as its only tag. A literary label is unusual on a category romance and may reflect nothing more than how the publisher classifies its list. Search under romance if the triple filing sends you somewhere unexpected.
