About This Audiobook

Lennox Freeman (Free) is one of the best hackers in the world which has caused him to spend most of his life on the run. Never able to put down roots, he couldn't trust anyone not to take advantage of him, even his own family.

Ivan Hart has lived and bled one creed all of his life: To Serve and Protect. His intense focus and determination in law enforcement has led him to finally commanding his own team. He'd worked hard to put together a squad of badasses capable of backing up a very dangerous team of detectives. Being God and Day's last line of defense came with a lot of responsibility that he took very seriously.

After his divorce was final Hart turned right around and remarried his job. He had his good friends there in the office with him every day, so it was easier to ignore the few quiet hours he spent at home alone each night. He'd settled well into his new routine and was comfortable with it. Then God decided to disrupt everything by hiring another tech specialist for his department. A man whose brains, trendy looks, and voice would leave Hart tongue-tied and captivated at their first introduction.

Contains mature themes.

Lennox Freeman has spent his life moving, because being one of the best hackers in the world means never trusting anyone around you, family included. Ivan Hart has spent his life moving in exactly one direction, toward the job, and he remarried it the day his divorce came through. A. E. Via drops them into the same department and lets the collision do the work. What this audiobook will not tell you anywhere in its fields is that it is the sixth book in a series.

First, the Big Picture

A December 2020 five-star spells out what the listing withholds. It opens by stating that this is the sixth book in the Nothing Special series, then situates everyone: Ivan Hart is the SWAT commander and Lt. Cash Godfrey's best friend, Lennox Freeman is the tech genius attached to the same team, and although Cash and Tech have small parts here they are essential to how the two leads develop. That is a paragraph of orientation a buyer should never have to source from a review column.

Both series fields on this page are empty. The description does nothing to fill them either, since it refers to God and Day as though you already know who they are, mentions a very dangerous team of detectives with no further explanation, and treats the office as an established place. A newcomer opening this file gets a competent standalone romance with a persistent sense of arriving late to something. Everything you need is recoverable, and none of it is where it should be. The tag field is empty as well, so a book this specific reaches browsers carrying two broad category labels and nothing else.

Arithmetic makes the shape of that 4.9 unusually clear. An average of 4.9 across twenty-eight ratings pins the total to a narrow band, because 135 points would display as 4.8 and 139 would round to 5.0, so the whole population holds at most four stars of deduction against a perfect 140. One of the five visible grades is a two, which spends three of those four points by itself. Whatever the remaining twenty-three unread votes are doing, they have almost no room left to disagree. This is a book its audience grades at the ceiling, with a single dissenter absorbing nearly the entire margin.

What Makes His Hart’s Command Worth Hearing

Only one direct verdict on the recording exists here, filed eight days after release in November 2019, and it leaves no room for doubt: Aiden Snow is perfection for this audiobook. The same five-star calls the story smoking hot and sweet as sugar at once and labels the whole thing a definite re-listen. Two useful things sit in that. The performance is the reason at least one listener stayed, and the tonal range being praised is the difficult part of this book, because a romance that swings between explicit heat and genuine tenderness inside the same chapter will collapse if the reading picks a lane.

Competence is what makes the pairing work: both men are good at what they do and neither needs rescuing. Free is a fugitive by profession and a specialist by temperament; Hart is a commander who built his own squad and takes the responsibility of being someone's last line of defense as a matter of identity. Eight hours and fifty-one minutes is a well-judged length for that, long enough for a slow recognition and short enough that the mutual circling never turns into stalling. The plot machinery stays in the background where it belongs.

Via also does something quietly unusual with Free's isolation. A man who has never been able to put down roots, who could not trust his own relatives not to exploit what he can do, is not written as damaged goods awaiting repair. He is written as somebody who made rational decisions under bad conditions and is now being offered different terms. The romance therefore turns on whether he believes the offer rather than on whether he deserves it, which is the more interesting question and much the harder one to sustain across an entire book.

A Few Reservations

Dissent is worth reading in full here. A two-star from January 2020, written by somebody who had read every earlier book in the series, calls this one far too mushy, describes constant eye rolling, and admits to stopping partway through. That is a specific complaint rather than a general one: the objection is to the ratio of sentiment to everything else, from a reader with a long history of enjoying the same author. If you came to this series for procedure and tension, take the warning seriously.

Something else the page does not do. The only content signal anywhere on this listing is the sentence contains mature themes, appended to the end of the description. For an explicit contemporary romance with an established series audience that is thin, and it puts the burden of working out heat level, on-page content and tone entirely on the reviews, which is exactly where a browser is most likely to meet a spoiler.

The Right Listener for His Hart’s Command

An August 2024 five-star describes the experience of a series reader better than any summary could. That reader expected the book to go one way based on the earlier volumes, watched it go somewhere else entirely with respect to Hart's past and his attraction to Free, and reports being surprised rather than annoyed. Pacing gets a specific mention, helped by groundwork laid in previous books. This is the listener the file was built for: somebody who has been waiting for these two and will notice what has been set up.

Pick it up if you read contemporary romance for competence porn between two grown men who both have jobs they are good at, if you want heat and tenderness in the same volume, and if a strong single-reader performance is what sells you on audio. Hold back if you need the series in order, because the page will not tell you what order that is. Hold back too if sentiment in large doses is a problem for you, since this is a romance that commits completely to its softest register and never once apologizes for it.

The Short Version

  • Performance: Aiden Snow draws the page's only performance verdict, and it calls the fit perfect eight days after release.
  • What it covers: Chosen family after a bad one, competence and command, a hacker with nowhere to land, second chances after divorce.
  • Feel: Warm, explicit and unexpectedly gentle.
  • Our call: A strong sixth entry that the listing refuses to identify as a sixth entry.

Good to Know

Is this audiobook part of a series, and where does it fall?

It is the sixth Nothing Special book, according to two separate responses on the page. Both series fields are blank, so nothing in the listing itself says so. The romance resolves inside this volume, but the supporting cast and the workplace arrive fully formed and unexplained.

Can you follow the story without reading the earlier books?

You can. Hart and Free are introduced properly and their arc completes here. What you lose is context for the detectives referred to by nickname in the description and for the friendships around the leads, which several readers treat as a meaningful part of the payoff.

How explicit does this audiobook get?

Explicit. The only formal signal on the listing is a closing line about mature themes, but responses describe it as smoking hot alongside considerable tenderness, and one long-term reader of the series found the sentimental register overwhelming. Expect open-door scenes rather than fade to black.

Can you finish this in one sitting at eight hours and fifty-one minutes?

Two or three sittings suits it better. The book alternates between workplace scenes and the developing relationship, which supplies natural stopping points, and a brief October 2021 five-star describes it as a story you do not forget rather than one you race through in an afternoon.
