About This Audiobook

Being invisible makes it really hard to get laid.

When half-human Kai Schiffer steps into the Interstices - the post-creation gaps between realms - his supernatural half kicks in, and he literally disappears unless...well, don’t ask.

But in a stroke (heh) of good fortune, Kai finally has a chance to show his face (and other parts, stars willing) to his long-time crush Jovan Kos - Interstitial Law Enforcement agent, wolf warrior, occasional berserker, and best man at their mutual best friends’ Imbolc wedding.

Jovan, who’s half in love with Kai already, is grateful his best man duties are light enough that he can focus all his attention on Kai. After all, with Enchanted Occasions Event Planning handling the Olesson-Pakulski wedding, what could possibly go wrong?

At a Glance

  • Narration: Kirt Graves is the named reader for a cast running from wolf warrior to occasional berserker, which is real range to ask for inside four hours.
  • Themes: Friends to lovers at somebody else's wedding, a half-human who vanishes at the worst moments, paranormal law enforcement, event planning between realms.
  • Mood: Filthy, quick and thoroughly good-natured.
  • Verdict: A funny, well-engineered novella let down only by a listing that conceals the series it belongs to.

Invisibility is a strange thing to build a romance around, and stranger still in an audiobook, where a recording keeps everybody invisible anyway. E.J. Russell's novella opens on a line that tells you everything about its register: being invisible makes it really hard to get laid. Four hours and twenty-two minutes, read by Kirt Graves, published by Reality Optional Press in May 2022. What follows is a wedding, a wolf, and a man who vanishes whenever he steps sideways out of the world.

Kai Disappears Right When He Wants to Be Seen

Underneath the joke, the mechanism is genuinely clever. Kai Schiffer is half human, and when he steps into the Interstices, the post-creation gaps between realms, his supernatural half takes over and he disappears completely, unless, as the copy puts it, well, do not ask. That is a romance engine with a fault line running straight through the middle of it: a character who literally cannot be seen, inside a book about wanting to be looked at by one specific person. Plenty of paranormal romance hands its lead a curse and then forgets to make the curse matter. This one built the plot out of it.

Graves Has to Make Invisibility Audible

The person doing the looking is Jovan Kos, introduced in a single breath as an Interstitial Law Enforcement agent, a wolf warrior, an occasional berserker, and best man. That list is a joke about how much backstory a genre hero can carry, and the word occasional does most of the work in it. Kai has been halfway in love for a long time; Jovan, the copy admits immediately, is halfway there himself. Both are at the same wedding, thrown for mutual best friends, handled by Enchanted Occasions Event Planning, and the description signs off by wondering aloud what could possibly go wrong.

Kirt Graves takes the recording, and the assignment carries a quirk worth naming. A listener cannot see anybody, so a hero who blinks in and out of visibility loses the contrast a printed scene gets from description. Everything about who can perceive whom has to arrive through voice, and through what the characters say they can see. That could be a liability, or it could be the reason this particular premise suits audio better than paper, and a scene with both leads in it is the only way to settle the question before buying.

You'll Know by the Second Sentence

You will know inside two sentences whether this is for you, which counts as a kindness. The copy winks constantly: a stroke of good fortune with a heh appended, a promise that Kai might show his face and other parts, stars willing. That is a deliberate tone declaration rather than an accident of drafting, and a reader who finds it charming will find the book charming. A reader who winces at a pun about getting laid should believe the wince and keep walking, because the register does not change later.

This page carries exactly one written assessment, filed a week after release, and it is warm. It calls the world imaginative and equally fascinating, populated by paranormal beings, and reports that the novella packs a punch and a whole lot of story for its size. It adores both leads by name. Its headline announces four and a half stars while the grade actually recorded alongside it is four, a small mismatch worth knowing about if you shop by numbers rather than by sentences.

Novella length is the right size for this material, too. Paranormal romance at this scale has to choose between building a world and delivering heat, and the copy suggests the choice was made by borrowing a world already built elsewhere and spending these pages entirely on two people. That is efficient. It also means the pacing problem that sinks most short romances largely evaporates, since you get a wedding, a complication and a resolution inside a single afternoon, with no subplot demanding room it cannot have.

Series Information That Was Never Filled In

Now the genuine problem with this page. The copy discusses Enchanted Occasions Event Planning as though you already know the outfit, refers to mutual best friends whose wedding this is, and hands you an Olesson-Pakulski surname pairing with no explanation attached. Every one of those signals points at a larger world holding other books. The series boxes on this record were never filled in. Somebody who finishes and wants more is left holding a phrase from a description and nothing else to search on.

That cuts in both directions. Arriving cold, you get dropped into a wedding between people you have not met, organized by a company whose earlier jobs you have not seen, at an Imbolc celebration the copy never once pauses over. None of it is fatal in a novella built around two characters, and it does ask you to take a great deal on trust during the first twenty minutes, which is a meaningful fraction of a four-hour file. Two fields and a number would have fixed the whole thing.

Invisibility Works Here as a Clever Metaphor

Paranormal romance readers who want something short, funny and openly horny are the core audience, and particularly anybody who enjoys a hero whose body problem doubles as a metaphor. Wolf warriors and berserkers are well-worn furniture in this corner of the genre; a man who cannot be seen unless he is turned on is not, so the novelty sits exactly where you want it. Weddings as a setting are reliably good value too, and this one arrives with a supernatural event planner attached to it.

Newcomers to this world are the ones most likely to feel the gap, so anybody who dislikes arriving mid-series without being told they are mid-series should start elsewhere in the line, assuming they can locate it. Anyone wanting slow, chaste or serious will be in the wrong place by the end of the description's first sentence. And anybody buying on grades rather than on sentences should note how thin the written record here really is before leaning on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Best Beast audiobook, and which reader is credited?

Four hours and twenty-two minutes, with Kirt Graves in the narrator field and Reality Optional Press releasing it on May 4, 2022. That runtime puts it firmly in novella territory, which suits a story built around two characters at a single event rather than a plot needing room to unfold.

Is Best Beast part of a series, and can the audiobook be taken first?

The copy names the event planners as Enchanted Occasions and refers to a wedding between characters you are assumed to know, yet neither series field on this record was ever completed. Treat it as an entry into an existing world the listing declines to map. Self-contained, but with borrowed furniture.

How explicit does it get?

The description sets the level itself, opening on a line about how badly invisibility interferes with getting laid and promising that Kai may show his face and other parts. Expect paranormal romance written for adults with the heat switched on, and read the sales copy as an accurate sample of the register.

What are the Interstices?

The copy defines them as the post-creation gaps between realms, and they matter because stepping into one triggers Kai's supernatural half and makes him disappear. That single rule generates the entire premise, since a man who vanishes in the place his crush works has an obvious problem to solve.
