About This Audiobook

Now in a convenient audio bundle, here are the first three novels in Jill Ramsower’s captivating Five Families Series.

Love and danger are intertwined for the Genovese sisters as they’re caught up in a dark web of schemes and violence, and find the ruthless men who will rule their hearts.

Forever Lies

When Alessia gets stuck in an elevator at work, she’s trapped with Luca, the hottest man she’s ever seen. But she can tell something dark hides beneath his charming facade, especially once he decides he’s not letting her go.

Never Truth

Sofia swore she’d never forgive Nico for leaving her in darkness. When Sofia’s powerful father hires Nico to protect her, Nico knows he’ll never be strong enough to walk away from her a second time…but convincing her won’t be easy.

Blood Always

Maria knows her arranged marriage is the best thing for her family, but she didn’t count on her husband Matteo’s ruthless determination to possess her–or their sizzling chemistry. Will they survive the passion that burns between them?

Author’s Note: These are mafia romances intended for mature audiences with some elements that may be inappropriate for sensitive audiences. For those of you who are new to me, I write what I’d call “mafia lite.” My heroes are hardened criminals with soft spots for their heroines. There may be violence and cruelty in my books, but never between the main characters. Enjoy!

Quick Take

  • Narration: Mackenzie Cartwright handles all three heroines with good differentiation, though the male leads occasionally blur together across the bundle.
  • Themes: Mafia romance, arranged marriage, second-chance love
  • Mood: Steamy, fast-paced, and unapologetically escapist
  • Verdict: If you want dark-adjacent romance that keeps its heroines safe from harm, this bundle delivers three quick emotional rides in a single listening session.

I was somewhere in the middle of a long train ride between Paris and Lyon when I started this bundle, mostly out of curiosity about what Jill Ramsower calls “mafia lite.” Three novels, nearly twenty-two hours, three Genovese sisters. By the time the train pulled into the station I was well into the second book and had already formed opinions about which sister got the best deal.

That framing, the author’s own term, honestly disarming in its self-awareness, tells you almost everything you need to know before you press play. Ramsower is not writing the kind of mafia fiction where the violence spills into the romance or where readers are asked to sit with moral discomfort. These are criminal men with what she calls soft spots for their heroines, and the series makes no apology for that arrangement.

Our Take on The Five Families, Books 1-3

The bundle collects Forever Lies, Never Truth, and Blood Always, each following one of the Genovese sisters into a relationship that begins in danger or deception and resolves in something like devotion. Forever Lies opens with Alessia and Luca getting stuck in an elevator together, a setup that reads as almost deliberately throwback, and the chemistry generated in that confined space is, by most accounts from listeners, the emotional high point of the entire collection. Reviewers singled it out repeatedly, and I understand why: Ramsower leans into the physical tension without letting the plot dissolve into it.

Never Truth is the second-chance story, Sofia and Nico, separated by a past betrayal and reunited through her father hiring him as her protector. The middle-book problem shows up here in subtle ways, the emotional beats feel slightly compressed compared to the first novel, the reconciliation a little too convenient. Blood Always, centered on Maria and her arranged husband Matteo, is arguably the most interesting premise of the three, because it puts the negotiation of power right into the premise from page one. Whether it fully delivers on that premise is where listeners seem to diverge.

Why Listen to This Bundle

One practical reason to choose the audio bundle over individual titles is that Mackenzie Cartwright maintains a consistent tone across all three, which matters when the stories are designed to weave together thematically. Her reading is energetic without being theatrical, and she distinguishes the three heroines well enough that the perspective shifts remain clear. Some listeners noted they felt the male leads blurred slightly, a fair observation. When you are listening to three criminal love interests back to back, some vocal differentiation would help.

The bundle format also rewards listeners who respond to a sense of accumulation. Each novel references the other couples in passing, and hearing all three in sequence gives those appearances more weight than they would have if you had a year between books. The world Ramsower builds, the five crime families, the overlapping loyalties, becomes easier to track as a listening unit.

What to Watch For in This Series

A recurring note in the reviews is that the stories feel rushed at the emotional pivot points. One listener described it as the characters diving into each other without earning the turn, and I think that is the most useful honest warning for listeners who prioritize emotional build over plot momentum. The books are not slow burns. They move, they deliver heat and resolution, but they do not linger in the uncertainty the way darker mafia romance sometimes does.

The author’s content note is also worth taking seriously. There is violence in the world of these books, and some of it appears on the page, but it is never directed at the heroines. Listeners who want moral complexity around the criminal elements will not fully find it here. Listeners who want the aesthetic without that friction will find exactly what they came for.

Who Should Listen to The Five Families, Books 1-3

This bundle works best for listeners who already know they enjoy the mafia romance subgenre and want a long uninterrupted run of it. It is not the right entry point for someone skeptical of the tropes, Ramsower is writing inside the genre rather than interrogating it. If you loved the elevator setup in book one, the remaining two novels will give you enough to stay satisfied. If you found the pacing light and the darkness more decorative than felt, books two and three will not change your assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the three books need to be listened to in order?

Yes. The Genovese sisters appear across each other’s stories, and the emotional payoff of later cameos depends on having heard the earlier books. The bundle is structured as a continuous world, not three standalone titles.

How dark is the violence in these mafia romances?

The author describes the series as mafia lite. Violence exists in the world and some appears in the narrative, but it is never directed at the heroines. Readers expecting the harder edges of dark romance will find this considerably softer.

Does Mackenzie Cartwright narrate all three books in the bundle?

Yes, Cartwright narrates the entire bundle, which helps maintain tonal consistency across the three novels. Her handling of the heroines is generally well-regarded, though some listeners found the male leads harder to distinguish from each other.

Which of the three novels do most listeners find strongest?

Based on the reviews, Forever Lies tends to generate the most enthusiasm, particularly the elevator scene between Alessia and Luca. Blood Always has the most interesting structural premise with the arranged marriage setup, but opinions on its execution are more split.

great book!

Loved all 3 books. All main characters frustrated me and I felt all the emotions. Secrets and lies were a big part of the turmoil between all the couples, and that’s what made their stories and my frustration with them of course. Loved it and can’t wait to read more.
